Does anyone have a handy chart showing common 400 stroker combos?

I'm interested in .030 and beyond

It gets fairly complicated depending on what exactly you're looking for. Personally I tend to stick with the 470 or the 512. I prefer the 2.200 rod journals and most engines I build these days are pump gas compression with out of the box Trick Flow heads. If you limit yourself to shelf pistons then you need to really do your research. If you are willing to pay for custom pistons then you'll have a lot more options.

I agree, 2.200 rods. Pick a shelf piston from a manf you like, get rods and crank to match.
I liked the 4.250" stroke version I ran for years. I think there are 4.15 stroke combos now-a-days with the 2.200 journal too.

easiest would be to take a 440 steel crank & turn the counterweights down to 7.25 then turn the mains down to the smaller 400 journal size after mocking up with new std main bearings & use the KB stroker pistons for this combo, gives 451 cubes. Not sure if the rods have to be changed if you offset grind the rod journals down to 2.20 or if they make a special rod bearing for that but that gives you 470 cubes & either one gives faster revving more cubes in the lighter/narrower 400 block. EDIT on second thought it would not be faster revving than a 440 cuz you would be useing the 440 stroke (I was thinking 400 stroke).

Regardless of the choices, setting the piston to head clearance is your (or builder's) responsibility. Read the supplier's notes on deck height, just don't assume yours will match exactly.

KB, United Machine web site has a good cubic inch calculator on it scope
Plug in the bore size and then add the stroke you want to know about and get the answers up
I've built a bunch of 400 motors with different stroke from 3.75 all the way up to 4.300 so far shruggy
I normally use a custom piston from Diamond or Ross also to get the compression ratio I want on each motor work
What kind of power and use are you looking to build?

buying new? pick a combo from 440 source and go, or get the crank and add all the other parts you want..
i like how the 470 looks, lots of torque from this one..
https://board.moparts.org/ubbthread...-470-street-strip-motor-on-the-dyno.html

I already have a 440 crank with the mains cut to B size, it might need just a bit of polishing to use. That has had me looking at all the 451 combos and comparing torque curves. Looking at that 470 above ^, it has me thinking I should just build a 470 and use some nice RPM/sidewinder/ProMaxx heads with minimal porting. I want some cruiser gears...

With the 451, I was going to use a Mahle 1.35ch piston if the block allowed me to, maybe the piston will be .005 out of the hole. The 78cc chamber of Trick Flow heads looks better for the compression ratio if that is the combo. I'm worried this combo will put the torque a little high for a street cruiser.

I still don't know what I want to build, finishing a garage at the moment.

I'm going to point out that AndyF put this spreadsheet up and it's pretty useful for looking at piston choices..

My next 400 based combo will be a 511 using a lightweight 4.25" stroke crank, 6.535 rods and a 4.375 bore. I'd like to get away from the 4.375" bore due to lack of ring choices. A thinner metric ring pack would allow for a longer rod without the piston pin getting into the ring lands. I will leave that rabbit hole alone for now.

Mahle has a 1.5,1.5,3.0 metric ring pack for the 4.375 bore size but they only offer a limited number of Mopar stroker pistons. They make a nice 12:1 flat top piston for a 505 with a 7.100 rod. That would be my preferred piston for a 505 bracket engine.

I agree I don't want to build anything with bigger than 1mm, 1mm, 2mm. The OEM's are nearly that thin and they will sign you up for a 120,000 mile warranty.

I wouldn't even consider that without fuel injection, at least on a street vehicle. S/F....Ken M

440Source with a 400/512 and light weight crank...9.68 so far and more to go.

my 400/512 with molnar crank and rod's , and un-touched TF 240's has been 9.83@134

I am not familiar with the Trick Flow heads at all. Mine engine I use Indy EZ1 heads that I port matched. The 9.68 was our first outing with the new combo. Went 6.13 in thew 1/8th. We were shooting for 5.99, so we will see if it has that much in it. I got the 60ft down in the 1.34's now, so we will see...

I used a shelf mahle 1.12ch piston with metric rings and a
6.7 scat 2.2 rod with 440source 4.25 crankshaft.
Lighter piston and longer rod win/win. Pistons were only 453 grams.
This piston is for the 4.15 stroke but with the longer rod only ends up .010 farther in the hole, which was perfect after decking the block .020.
