Guys, asking for a friend.
A mate has this purple cam, has what looks like Hemi orange marker on it, it came with the Hemi he purchased, can anyone identify its spec by the colour coding? Apparently it’s how MP labels the cams????, he is unsure if it’s a hydraulic or solid. He is going to put a degree wheel on it etc but trying to identify the lifter type

Do your lobe testing at .050 and don't forget that the hemi lobes are not in the same location on the intake and exhaust lobes are like the wedge motor are. BB have the #1 exhaust lobe first and then the #2 exhaust lobes and then the two intake lobes beside each other, the 426 Hemi motor are not like that. scope
I would do the lobe separation angle testing at .200,.100 and at .050 before and after max lift on the lobes to figure where the LSA are on both sides of the cam, intakes and exhaust up scope
I've call the old and new Mopar tech lines when looking for tech. help on those cams, you might as well ask your dog about them whiney

I assume it doesn't have a number on the back?

I don’t believe there is a number on it, Cab, I’ll pass the info on

The last time I contacted Mopar tech about the "590" solid lifter cam that had a number stamp on the back they told me that # identified the vendor who made it , not the grind shruggy
I called about the cam having .557 net lift at the retainer instead of having .590 like they use to advertised, they ended up telling me that they had switch vendors earlier that year and had dyno tested the new vendors .590 grind and it was still good even though it didn't have .590 net lift in my motor. confused To be honest about this I had not check the lobe lift on that cam before calling them, I did end up learning later that a lot of the ductile rocker arms made back then didn't always have the true 1.5 ratio built into them whiney
I now check both the lobe lift and the net lift at the retainers with soft checking springs and sometimes again with the race springs to see how much loss of lift I get on that motor up scope

I too have a cam out of a 528 crate motor that I do not know what the specs are. I know it is a hyd cam as I have all the lifters and im the one who took it out of the motor. I wish I could find the mopar specs they had for this cam and compare to what my findings are.

Here is a high level overview of the multiple generations of Direct Connection cams, as I know it, and I must admit some of what I know may only be partially true
but this is what I've gathered over time:

The very oldest that I know of were mostly Crane/Racer Brown/Isky, not even repackaged, sold at the dealer.

The first purple shafts had a vendor ID number, purple paint, and paint dots/blobs/slathers to halfheartedly attempt to identify them, and mostly fail to do so.
I hated trying to ID these, it was hopeless without measuring.

The next had a vendor ID, an internal vendor grind number, purple paint. If you have the decoder for the internal grind number you're good.

The next had a cam-only (not the packaged number with lifters) number engraved, purple paint was deleted...this change is very helpful for ID.

The very latest ones I have seen have the purple paint brought back + the engraved ID number for cam-only

What you have there is the second generation, the ones I hated trying to identify with the paint markings that were usually the wrong color or applied in the wrong place.
Best way I know is mock it up in a shortblock and measure lift and duration.

Zippy, do you recall what mopar used as specs of cams in the 528 crate motors?

Gary, the pre-Barton one was 248/252-108 .524/.543 according to old marketing materials.

The Barton one was a departure from traditional direct connection marketing and deliberately listed no specs.

I'll definitely be back for another chassis Dyno session one of these days.

Rich

Thanks guys, all very good information so it’s appreciated.

The cam in question is in great condition, the problem my friend is trying to determine is he needs lifters, and without knowing what this cam actually is he can’t determine if it’s a solid lifter cam or a hydraulic lifter cam,
