Sitting in a traffic jam on I 85 North in Charlotte when the truck in front of me starts rolling backward and doesn't even feel himself hit me as he the pushes me backward into the truck behind me.

Old guy from Kentucky who is probably too old to he driving a tractor trailer at 10PM. I think he fell asleep, but he swears up and down that he was stopped and the guy behind me must have rear ended me and pushed me into him.

This is the perfect icing on the crap cake that has been my day today.

Everyone was fine. It was a minor accident, but a major inconvenience...not to mention the weird sensation of watching 40 tons slowly roll back into you.

I was in my beater '02 Sequoia. It only got a minor scuff on the bumper...which is funny, because the freightliner behind me got its bumper insert destroyed.

Glad you're OK. That's really frightening. I would suggest putting your Sequoia on a lift and checking it underneath, just to be sure. With that much damage to the semi's bumper, it's possible yours is worse than it looks from outside.

I hope you don't get the same venom directed at you as I received when I posted about a 77 year old truck driver and made a similar comment. He was driving a semi for Chrysler, never hit his brakes, slammed into the back of my co-worker's stopped Explorer at an estimated 48 mph (per Ohio State Highway Patrol), and sandwiched him between the semi and a box truck. The Explorer was so badly crushed that it had to be towed to a body shop with Scott's body still in it, and then put on the frame machine and pulled before using the jaws to get Scott out. THey couldn't do it at the scene because there was no room to cut the vehicle and get him out without cutting his body in the process. Lots of the Moparts crowd was angry that I dare mention that the driver was 77...you know, because "My dad is 90 and a great driver," or "but muh freedoms."

not-a-charger, guess I missed that one. Sorry about your co-worker. Drove a tow truck a good many years before I became a dealer tech and never saw one that bad. frown

just a week ago, there was an incident similar to this on I-80 a few miles down the road from me.
a truck was stopped for construction [at night, don't remember the time] and a guy in a pickup/SUV and another truck couldn't stop.
the guy in the pickup became the "meat" in the sandwich. he didn't make it.
drove past the accident scene yesterday, and the truck and trailer [that couldn't stop] were still there, over the bank. both destroyed.

Oh man...That is horrible! I'm sorry for your co worker and his family.

I was very fortunate. I was stopped between two stopped vehicles. Had I been closer to the shoulder, I probably could have zoomed to the shoulder and avoided the whole thing. As it is, I really can't overstate what a minor wreck this actually was. I was more bothered by the inconvenience of having to wait on the side of the highway in the heat for three hours until the NC State Trooper showed up. Had there been no damage to the truck behind me, I would have just said "no harm no foul" and left, but I didn't want to leave because the guy at fault was claiming that the last guy in line rear-ended me and pushed me into him, so I wanted to make sure they got the real story from two people.

The guy in the truck behind me told me that, occasionally, if you're in a traffic jam and you're at the end of your hours for the day and you're tired, you might not realize that you're not pressing hard enough on the brake pedal and start to roll back and not realize it due to seeing the trucks next to you moving forward, so perhaps that's what happened.

I did discover some creases in the bumper cover this morning with the benefit of daylight, but as it's my beater, I might not even report them. I took a good look underneath, and I don't see any evidence of structural damage.

Winner, winner

I sat in (and participated when it was my turn) through 4 hours of depositions yesterday because of an accident three years ago... I was at fault (partially) and I have no problem owning up to that but someone else was as well... A dash camera would have resolved a whole lota BS much sooner.

I run a Van-True brand camera purchased via Amazon now. The number of absolute ****ing idiots out there driving like maniacs is unreal.

I read Car/Driver & other mags related to newer models. There's always been "maniacs" out there.
What has me concerned is all these newer/modern "average" vehicles on the roads these days, with HP ratings that are ridiculous for the vehicle they're in.

Seems like the manufacturers believe the way to increase sales is "advertise" performance/power/etc/ on vehicles slated for the "average" car buyer/user. Drifting/Burnouts/Donuts shown in commercials.

Put your 3 pc suite business man, soccer mom,or teenager in a "souped-up" vehicle & they become,or think they're are Mario Andretti on the road.

Seems more people drive with 2 only two "skills"; Hit the Gas-Then Hit The Brake!
After All: The new-fangled electronic gizmos that the sales person says is built-in, should take care of everything else.

Or, in the case of the AARP crowd, hit the gas instead of the brake.

One bad side effect of this is that it's now got me scared of getting on the interstate in the Corvette. The mansfield bar on the back of that trailer would have gone right over my hood and (at best) destroyed the car and (at worst) resulted in pretty severe injuries if I hadn't been able to exit the car quickly enough...and even then, I had traffic on both sides, so who knows what would have happened if I jumped out of the car.

The accident was minor thanks, in part, to the vehicle I happened to be in.

I don't know how you guys on 2 wheels handle that kind of stress.

There are countless memes on the internet making fun of Mustang drivers getting sideways at car shows. In the Musclecar days, the cars were powerful, but you had to put in a lot of work and money to make them as powerful as a new Mustang (or Camaro or Challenger). During that time, you got used to controlling your car. Now, You can go out and get your self a brand new Mustang GT for 36,000 dollar MSRP (or buy a used one for a good bit less) and go show off...its kinda scary.

How about requiring an owner completing a Driving/Safety Course on any vehicle with HP rating over 400?
Betcha insurers would love, but dealers would go ape-sh1t over it..........
