Well, not too long ago I saw a picture in this forum where somebody did just that. Not saying it's simple, but it can be done. Thank God, there are many "crazy" guys here, myself included. I gutted mine and even put some plastic angle iron on the top to keep it in place. As I used it as a prop at shows and just swapped it. but have used a battery inside. I have 2 sets of caps. Also at the time I just had a set of cables am now bolting the wires direct with bolts and washers right to the post underside. And putting the battery ends on the inside battery. My other cables were top post battery to side post battery on both ends. So the side post did not touch the side post.

The top picture is after I sanded the case and rubbed it out, I may have gone the extra mile. But the car was in ISCA/WOW type shows for years. I figured it was way better to cut the top off and be able to sit a battery inside over doing as others did and cutting the bottom open. If you look you can see doing it this way cut the plates loose so I could set the top aside and then gut the whole bottom. As far as the Plates themselves after out was able to clean the extra plastic out clean on the sides that held the plates in place. To have a nice clean inside
