Have an odd problem that is probably stiction from the break in oil.
Mocking up valve train on a new build and the cam "creaks"like a door hinge.
Remove any 8 pushrods ,noise goes away .Only with full load of all 16 pieces. New roller etc. It's not the lifters or the pushrods or rockers

No intake on engine, can clearly see and hear it is the cam.
Bar it either direction, "creaks".
Remove some push rods,no sound.
Cam turns free by hand.
Primed the oil system and rotated. Still does it.
I come to believe it's the oil,it's break in oil with whatever is in that stuff.
If you ever tried to tighten a headbolt more ,that chatter /creak is how it sounds

Anyone ever experienced this?

Kind of had this problem last week, but don't know if its the same noise. What was happening was that the cam was walking forward and the chain was creaking because it was out of alignment. It was almost as if the cam was screwing out. I thought maybe because I replaced the #3 cam bearing (scored from oil feed hold directly toward the edge of the bearing. At any rate I looked from the side and saw a pretty good gap between the cam gear and the thrust surface. Took off the rockers and tapped the cam back and noise went away.
Just a thought

I know the noise!I had tight main bearings though and had the block line honed and .001 king bearings done.

How strong are your valve springs?

I was wondering if it could be the nylon cam button.
Cam has very little endplay.
I thought rollers didn't have anything to make them walk?
Cam gear has a torington thrust bearing.
Will check alignment, thanks.
Just ain't finding a reason so far.
1st roller cam I've ever touched.
Maybe the last too....

It's pretty darn hard to bar over.
Gonna need a pony motor to start it..!!

I did all the same as you turning cam without valvetrain and with and there is a tight spot of a couple cylinder I have to roll past and then the engine turns over better.my springs are 650# open solid roller.I may need to service the rollers soon.

sounds to me like there is a bind somewhere - did you check for interference around the retainers and rockers - how about push rods and the heads ?

You can go 10# more on tq with ARP head bolts/studs to help seal the head.

I had a very similar problem. On mine, noise is from the cam bearings/journal interface. I pulled the cam and had it coated, that fixed it. when this motor comes apart, I plan on polishing the heck out of the journals and installing coated beings.

Only time I ever had that kind of noise, I convinced myself it was a rocker arm during mockup.

A little bit more oil was used from then on.

Dave,no contact anywhere.
1st heard it checking V/Piston clearance.
Had all 16 in and heard this sound [censored]? As I removed pieces to take measurements ,sound stopped.
Thought, well maybe Iv`e turned it so many times Iv`e dried out the journals. Primed the system. No change.
Cam is free, floats freely against the button.

Should have expected something not right. 1st set of cam bearings I think Iv`e ever installed that DID`NT require shaving to get the cam in. Drove`m in,,cam fit 1st try......... hammer

I don't know if listening with a stethoscope will help if someone can listen.

a possibility i have had is that some times that noise can come from the inner damper spring - since they are new and I am assuming probably somewhat dry they can get a little noisy until they get run in - if everything is checking out - put it together !

Hmmmm, never gave the springs any thought.

Possible I suppose.

Getting the car back out after 5 years has turned into a reality show.
You just can't believe the "never had any problems before " list of things.

I am not giving up on it tho..... drinking

its a race car - they have their own on-going mystery problems that never seem to stop! I get nervous when everything is running just right - I begin wondering what little gremlin will pop up! I just went through my gauge LED lights wiring because it blew a 3 amp fuse - checked and re-checked then put another fuse in and everything is good

You description implies that that the cam might be flexing or simply loading the cam journal(s) against the bearing(s) with all 16 valve springs loading the cam, but not with only 8. Maybe under operating conditions with oil pressure, the symptom (and not necessarily a problem) goes away.
