I am going to look at a rough untitled 64 Polara this morning. The owner claims it’s a 440 4 speed car with its numbers matching block! I know they made a model 440 but thought the engine was a 383 . I have just a couple pics and it looks like the hump for the four speed was cut out . Just trying to do a little research but I go.

Did they put a 440 in a 64? If so what would the VIN read?

Thx

No such thing as a 440 cubic inch engine in a 1964 Dodge from the factory.

The VIN's of that era only told you that the car was either a 6 cylinder or a 8 cylinder.

"numbers matching" started in '68. the only "numbers" prior to that are casting numbers and casting dates.
the engine could have come from almost anything and still have a "correct" casting number and cast date for the car in question, proving nothing.
and as said, the VIN only proved /6 or v8.

Rough and untitled = $500 car. These are only just starting to rebound in value. AFAIK first year for the 440 was 65.

I noticed that too. Also could you still get the dual quad 383 by '64? I think it was rated at 343hp in earlier years.

The fabled NASCAR single 4bbl Hemi. There are a few running in Stock. Barton had one that ran pretty good.

Fender tag will tell you what the original engine is. The VIN doesn't provide much data on those early cars. Lots of people confuse the 440 model for the 440 engine. Even some Mopar guys get that one wrong.

Wasn't a 413 available in the '64 Polara 500?

I tried to buy a 415 HP 426W M.W. 4 speed Dodge 330 in the spring of 1964, the Dodge Chrysler dealer in Palm Springs, CA (The nearest dealer to me back then) swore up and down that Dodge didn't make a 415 HP 426 wedge, only 365 HP rant
Chrysler Corp had started making the hemi race only cars by then and they quit making the M.W. motors around April 1 was what I learned later whiney
The 426 C.I. wedge motors came in 3 different HP ratings in 1964 only, 365HP, 415Hp and 425 HP.
The 426 Race Hemi motors came in 2 different HP ratings 425 HP for drag racing with the cross ram and two carbs and the single four barrel NASCAR 410 HP scope
Mopar did not have its act together on getting information to the dealers on the hot rod cars they offered whiney
GM and Ford did shruggy

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Would the casting dates start in 65? I could have sworn I looked at a 65 block years ago.

Chrysler installed the 350 HP 440 motors beginning in 1966 Chrysler and Imperials, not in Dodge or Plymouth passenger cars.
In 1967 they introduced the 375 HP Magnum 440 motors in the Dodge Coronet R/T and Plymouth GTX only.
I have had and built several early 440 blocks that where cast in 1965 also up

by mid-1966 model year the 440 also made its way into Dodge & Plymouth C-bodies (some even with 4-speeds) J = 440 cu.in.
