Only 70

Off the top of my head I know 850 is 71 Sixpack and 544 is 68 Hemi

I got my 672 back from the rebuilder today. Looks great, should work well in the car. Has upgraded bands, friction discs and bushings, 4 set planetaries etc,.but basically a stock 6BBL build.

Asked the seller about my 6BBL transmission. My 6BBL, #672 transmission came from a wrecking yard in Georgia. My 6BBL car came from a wrecking yard in Georgia as well.

The casting dates on the main case are 05/69, and on the tail shaft (which is C-body Specific) are 05/69. The assembly date for the 672 is 9/1969. My 6BBL car's SPD is 10/15/1969. It's possible it could be a warranty replacement 6BBL specific transmission for a C-body, or the tail shaft just happens to be correct. Whatever the case, it works for me.

Winner, winner chicken dinner.

It's better than having a 6BBL 727 from a Road Runner IMHO.

What does the absence of the VIN on the pad indicate? A service replacement? Could sand blasting the case have caused the VIN to disappear? I thought all 70's era transmissions got VIN's stamped on the case whether it was destined for a passenger car or truck. Last year I bought a 1970 U-code Cuda with its original 440 engine. But the 727 transmission has a 1975 part number and date code. There is no VIN on the pad. It was DOA and needs to be rebuilt.

I am not sure whether it is a worthwhile endeavor to find a correct 670 transmission for my Cuda. Did the exterior design of the case change from 1970 to 75? Are there any noticeable visible differences? I could always get my transmission rebuilt to 670 specs.

Whats the availability like now on 670 TorqueFlites?

Service replacements had no VIN, dealers were required to stamp a VIN in replacements but few did. One purchased directly from the parts counter for non-original installation obviously would never get a VIN stamped.

A 670 is a lot easier to find than a 671 or 672. As for case differences I doubt there are any major differences.

It's really up to you if you care about the correct part number or not.

Nice thread Guys!

My 0672 trans has NOT got the hemi wide-drum inside, is this correct for a late 69 trans?
Heavy duty 4 pin planets but stock looking front drum and band.

Many thanx for any help with this.

Its not just the part number as with 440 blocks but the internals are H/D.
I was toying with an upgrade to 1971 internals like my 71-GTX has?

Better drum stability as I have several pre 71 drum failures... fan

Please explain/describe your front drum failures.

That part numbered trans would have come with the wide drum and band, and all the other related parts. Thy were swapped out for some reason. A parts failure, a rebuilder that couldn’t get the correct band, or someone “borrowing” the expensive parts and replacing with standard parts. “He will never know”

Lots of the Hemi internal parts were swapped out for various reasons...availability of replacement parts or the realization that those parts weren't any better than the lesser units. The then-taunted wide drum and band and the 5.0 lever are now recognized a being redundant; hardly anybody uses them anymore.

For correct restorations, only the case is needed.
