I wouldn't want to b around if those brass weights came off. Pretty impressive power for what it is.

Several comments caught my attention, like E bay purchased twenty + yrs ago confused
The first stroker motor I had was a 1959 383 motor that had a 413 crank in it that had been welded up and offset ground to make the stroke 5/8 longer than stock, I was told it was a 454 C.I.. confused I didn't have the tools or skill to verify the stroke back then whiney It had steel plates welded onto the counter weights for balancing also, not bolted on brass weights work Old times, old ways work
That exhaust sounded a lot different than other 180 degree crankshaft 4 stroke motor I've heard at the drag races years ago, those where 426 hemi motors raced in modified eliminator in either 1970 or 1971 at the NHRA Winternationals. One car had a set of 180 degree headers and the other one (both where 2nd gen Baracuda) had the 180 degree crankshaft, both cars sounded like they had six cylinder motors in them confused shruggy
Lycoming aircraft makes a flat 8 cylinder opposed air cool aircraft motor that is around 720 C.I. that made 400 HP at or close to 2600 RPM N/A. , I think they have a 180 degree crankshaft in them and they don't sound like a six cylinder motor like those hemi motors did confused
The thing to remember about a 4 stroke 180 degree crankshaft motor with 8 cylinders is two cylinder will be firing at the same time to get all eight cylinders to make the complete four strokes in 720 degrees of crankshaft revoltion, correct work
I know guys that would have killed to get that Chevy motor back in the day shruggy

You can buy a flat plane kit for a ford and chevy today. I had one on the dyno and that thing accelerated stupid fast. LOL

I was also surprised at the sound of this engine.

I saw Wiley Cossey run a 1967 Plymouth at I think the 1967 Nationals in Indy with a "flat crank". It sounded like an Indy car and I was told tried to shake everything off the car that was not safety wired.

And there's the rub. The flat crank engine has real balance problems and for years the upper limit on flat crank V8 displacement has been less than 300 cubic inches. If you look at all the racing engines and ultra high performance V8s with 180 degree cranks, you find most of them at 200 cubic inches or close, or less. And yes, safety wiring is necessary for most of these engines, although I don't think the new Ford engine is safety wired.

The flat crank 8 is exactly like two four cylinders at right angles to each other. Four cylinders have inherent shaking problems. When they get much bigger than 2 liters they will have a balance shaft to counteract the shaking. So two of them at right angles will have even more severe problems. The advantage is it's easier to do ram tuning with a four cylinder because of the evenly spaced exhaust pulses. The disadvantages outweigh the advantages in most every case, except for the Indycar and Ferrari V8s.
