If I’m using Valvoline VR1 racing oil for my break in do I still need to use a liter of zinc additive? Motor is a roller 440, my thinking is it’s only the rings that need to seat.

Oh yeah, it's a hybrid.....it burns gas and tires!

The VR-1 oil will have more than enough zinc in it.

Shouldn't be needed.

There are no dumb questions (only rude answers!) & rare on that. On the ring breakin my take is that you get one shot to get it right & get excellent leakdown numbers/minimal oil consumption) as opposed to good numbers. I had always went with the procedure at www.mototuneusa.com then someone on here said there procedure ain't quite right & posted another site (from a ring mfr iirc) but I cant find it.

Robert: I had previously reviewed the Mototune method and find it to make good sense. The only question / concern I have with using this method is that it seems to focus on ring seating and has no reference/s to camshaft break-in or impact while using their ring seating method. I guess what this says is that the camshaft get's its break-in in parallel with the rings getting seated. I recall reading the Ronnie Sox would break-in his race car engines by making a few 1/4 mile passes. This somewhat follows the Mototune concept but also discounts or by-passes the typical camshaft break-in procedure most of us use.
