Hi all. I have to drop the stock transmission pan on my 727 to replace a leaking pan gasket. Does anybody know how much trans fluid a stock 727 pan holds? Also can different types of transmission fluids be mixed? I have no idea what type of tranny fluid is in the transmission at this time. It's a 1969 727 trans. I bought the car 20+ yrs ago and have no idea what the previous owner used. I hope it was Dexron, but even so I see that today there are different types of that even. shruggy Please help.

With a stock pan, a pan gasket replacement usually requires 4 quarts depending on how long it sat after shutdown for a refill and, yes, you can mix fluids.

You had the car for 20 years and never changed the trans fluid? Drop the pan, check for debris in the fluid, change the filter and put in type "F" as stated.

good luck

I disagree. I've never used type F in a non Ford trans. Just use Dexron, that is what it was designed to use. Type F was a bandaid for another Ford screwup. 4-5 quarts should be plenty.

Always difficult to get agreement on trans fluid type!

I say Dex/Merc

Agreed. Type F is among the worst for lubrication quality also. It’s not the hot ticket.

If the fluid looks bad and pan has material inside then drain the converter and replace most of the fluid. Buy a case.

Hey guys, me again. All the Dexron ATF that I'm finding is synthetic Dexron 6. Is that all that is made today and can that be mixed with normal Dexron ATF of 20 yrs ago? Or do I have to drain all the tranny fluid out of everything like the Torque converter & bottom of rad tank? shruggy wrench

So, Ford transmissions are failing left and right from lack of lubrication? My anecdotal experience says otherwise.

Valvoline Dex/Merc is not synthetic. Type F supposedly will give firmer shifts so if that's what you want in lieu of better protection I guess.

I don't understand why this is a recurring controversy, but then I'm no expert.

iagree with John.

I've run Type F for years in 727s. Even ran the B&M TrickShift fluid but stopped buying it after I met a gentleman who worked for B&M that told me not to waste my money on TrickShift fluid. Said it was only Type F with a couple of additives and a color change, and regular Type F worked just as well.

When I got the Charger back on the road, I went on the race board and asked about fluid since I had been out of the hot rod game for 20 yrs. or so. Most everyone recommended Type F from Walmart. Been in it ever since with no problems. up

No they aren't but, put Dexron in a Ford transmission that requires type F and see what happens.

I've used type F in 727 transmissions and never had any fluid related failure.

Hi once more. We've kind of gotten away from my last question. I don't know what type of ATF is currently in my 69 727 trans. I need to drop the pan to replace a leaking pan gasket. Can different types of fluids be mixed? Or do I need to drain the entire transmission system so I know whats in it for sure. I was planning on using Dexron ATF because that is what the owners manual calls for in 1969. Thanks for the advice.

Personally, I would drain the converter also and adjust the bands, especially if it hasn't been serviced in the 20+ yrs. you have owned it. up

iagree Adjusting the bands while you have the pan off would be a good idea. And for a stock application, just buy the cheapest Dexron or F that you can find. Even today's cheapest will be better than the best '69 ATF that was available.

this is somewhat relevant, in that it applies to non-recommended fluid, but i have ran, and continue to run, dexron in my 4spd front drive minivans for 100's of thousands of miles with absolutely NO problems what so ever. 95 minivan - over 318k+ [speedometer broke], 2000 minivan - 240k, 99 minivan - 168k, my wife's 94 chrysler concorde - 138k.
but we don't do dragstrip duty either.
your results may vary
i wouldn't sweat ford fluid in a 727, no matter the brand chosen.

Not necessarily answering your question, but I used this in a fresh rebuilt 727: Castrol Transmax Dex/Merc

https://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/FusionPDS.nsf/Files/2EBBCEC56A0472F5802579C3004B587E/$File/BPXE-8SL9PJ.pdf

Mainly because of this statement:
Meets DEXRON®-IIIH requirements. Also satisfies requirements of DEXRON®, DEXRON®-III, IIE and II. Do not
use this ATF in applications calling for DEXRON®-VI. Use Castrol Transmax™ Type F ATF in applications calling
for Type F.

Cant tell if it is synthetic though.
