I'm pretty sure that a non-lockup A-727 converter can be used in a non-lockup A-518 (46RH). AFAIK a post-66 A-727 has a 24 spline input shaft and the early non-lockup A-518 does too. So can someone weigh in and confirm/negate that the converters interchange?

All 1967 and later non-lockup converters interchange between the large family transmissions.

Yes, lockup to lockup except for V10 and diesel converters.

All large family lockup input shafts and stator supports share the same spline counts and diameters so even the diesel and V-10 can be swapped, not sure you would want to though.

The diesel and V-10 use 12-3/4” converters - the stall speeds differ drastically between the two.

And while I have never tried - I think the 12-3/4” converter may not fit the regular bellhousing.

That is why you can't swap a diesel or V10 converter. They don't fit the bell housing and even if you could get it in there it would still stick out about an inch. The flex plate bolt pattern is different as well.

You can’t put a clutch on the front of a 727 either.

Oh wait, yes you can. It’s called a Clutchfilte.

My response was directed at the fact the OP mentioned the spline count.

The 47/48 cases became extinct a while back so we modified no less than 20 cases this way for an off road program.

One was also used in a blown Hemi application using that monster converter.

And my response was directed at feets. While you can modify anything to fit just about anything, that isn't what is implied by "interchange". That would be a direct swap, not a machining and fabrication process. Thank you for the insight.

We have plenty of construction zones here as well but where you have 3 days of summer (July 3rd, 4th, and 5th) we have 3 days of winter, usually in January but the days vary year to year. laugh2

The converters changed in 96 when the RE trans was phased in. The flex plate pattern is symmetrical as opposed to the RH which is the normal one way only.
