Have to redo my valve covers on my 440,, after sand blasting should I use etching primer ? or clean and just use a good high temp paint.

Painting an engine/components I usually put down a coat of etch primer followed by a coat of Single Stage/ straight Enamel, avoid the spraycan crap....

I always make sure there's mechanical & chemical adhesion on engine tin, and even when I've had to use rattle-can topcoat, never had a flaking or peeling problem.

I clean well and go straight to rattle can engine paint. Never had a problem with it peeling or looking bad.

Valve covers typically don't get that hot so high temp paint is kind of overkill. Don't feel restricted on your options ... here's a few ideas from my work stash.

I glassbead or sandblast EVERYTHING body or engine/driveline wise inside and out with ZERO issues, you just have to have an OCD attitude about blowing out/cleaning the part(s)/component(s) afterwards

Yes, as long as you have the OCD it will be OK...but really OCD, not just a spray with brake kleen. Sand can get embedded in the metal, or collect under the baffles etc, and several people found that out the hard way when their fresh engine had glass or sand in the oil after breakin. I'm not sure how many people would take enough care. But if you do, should be OK. Stakes are high though.

I wire brushed mine, cleaned everything white glove clean with brake cleaner, and sprayed a couple coats Plasti-Kote engine paint on the bare metal.

Looked great and held up perfectly for the 10 years I had the car. Simple.
