Does anyone know if the ATI Crank Trigger Shells 916612TR is the proper shell for the ATI917127E damper. Summit wasn't sure and MSD didn't give me a straight answer. The seemed more interested in selling me their crank trigger wheel.

I know FHO sells them but I have some summit bucks expiring so would prefer to buy at Summit and I hate to bother FBO if I'm buying elsewhere.

I'd rather keep this as compact as possible and just use shell with the magnets.

Thanks

Ok

You might try ATI. I was told that it's easy to mess that up.

That's my concern. I'll give ATI a call.

I talked to ATI TECH yesterday, you will need to know where your mounting the trigger pick up (angle to timing mark) in order to get the pickup magnets in the proper location on the shell prior to ordering.
If you already have the ATI damper they suggest you send it back to them to install it on the damper

Thanks Rattrap. I will call ATI as well as FHO. I'll be using Andy's set up for the mount. I know Andy states FHO has shells build specifically for this situation.

I'll use the summit bucks on other items. I will let everyone know what FHO says.

Ok

I had no problems with my ATI damper with 6 bolt Chrysler bolt pattern and a MSD crank trigger with a stock water pump housing but using a Meziere electric water pump. I would recommend going with a big block Chevy bolt pattern hub, that way there is much more available for front drive set up and pulleys. I had to make all of my brackets, mounts, spacers etc.

Thats another reason I want to have the magnets in the shell. I have pullies that work with them s damper. The only add on would be a front drive for a vacuum pump if I go that direction. The vacuum pump manufacturer has said they have a front drive for my set up so we will see.

ATI needed more information than I could provide. So right now I'm waiting to here back from FHO.

Ok

They wanted to know where it would be mounted which was easy, passenger side bottom of timing cover but I did not know the angle of the pick-up. I will be using Andys mount, I figured that since Andy notes FHO has a shell for his set up I would contact them. Just waiting on a response to my email. I called but was told Tim was out and to send an email to him. I will let everyone know what I'm told when I hear back from FHO

The pickup sensor will be about 50 degrees behind the pointer. So if you are going to run 35 degrees BTDC timing then put the first magnet at 15 degrees ATDC. You should be able to mock it up with your existing parts and verify where you want it before you order the shell from ATI.

Best Machine does a lot of these setups also so you could ask them if they have any ATI dampers or shells to sell. I don't know if they keep them in stock or not. You'll also need a special short version of the trigger pickup bracket. I make short ones for Best and FHO or you can build your own.

I used an ATI damper with a 3 bolt Chevy pattern. Used an MSD Small Block Chevy crank trigger kit. 3 bolts with 4 magnets gives you some clocking options. Set the engine up at 35* BTC, picked a clock location and built a bracket to mount the MSD bracket and pickup in the center of the adjustment window with the pick up in the correct location at a magnet. Simple. Worked perfectly.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.
