I'm having a big block stroker motor built that I'm guesstimating will be about 600 HP. I have a currently stock 727 trans. from a 440 HP motor that I will be using with it that I need to have gone through and upgraded to handle the increased HP. I've never had a trans. done like this before so I have no idea what to expect price-wise. I haven't got any quotes yet but if it's like everything else, I expect there to be a range in the prices I am quoted. So what I would like to know is, what do you think a fair price would be to have this work done?

Last fall I paid $1200 for the rebuild of my 727. That included a bunch of internal parts because it was in pretty bad shape. Came with a new 2500 rpm converter and I told him it needs to hold up to 500+ lb-ft of torque (future engine) so it got a bolt in sprag. I think that was pretty fair pricing. I did the R&R of the transmission and dropped it off to save the ~$300 labor for them to do it.

I just had my (c. 1965 model) 727 done 6 months ago, and included a rebuild kit, later-model pump & direct drum, a shift kit, accumulator piston, and front planet 4 pinion - total bill was $875 (parts $575, labor $300, 12-month, 12,000 mile warranty), and that was without a torque converter. I bought a B&M separately, for $370.

The price of a transmission build can vary widely depending upon how its quoted. Some builders will follow a more conservative approach and reuse certain components that others following a more CYA approach would scrap and replace regardless. The low bid may be based upon all normal non consumables are good for reuse and then they start nickel and diming you as they find parts need to be replaced, vs the high bid where all the bushings, pump gears, new front planet ect are all automatically replaced. A detailed enough quote saying what exactly will be done/parts replaced would be the best way to know what your $ is buying.

IMHO I would consider John Cope/CRT for your needs, I've sent quite a few customers his way, and all have been more than pleased with the product/service and pricing over the years

I would have Joe at TranzAct build your transmission. I will also say that he top three MoPar trans. builders are in Indiana. TranzAct, A&A and Cope. Not listed in any particular order.

Assuming all the hard parts are serviceable, Mancini used to sell a race rebuild kit with the good clutches and steels, all the seals etc shift kit and a deep pan for about $300.

I dropped my core off with that kit to my trans guy and he charged me $300 cash to build it. That was a while ago so I'd expect it to be a little more now but should still be no more than $800ish.

Shouldn't take more than 3 or 4 hours tops to clean and build it.

where are you located ?

what will the trany be used for street , race , both ?

compression and cam ?

auto or manual valve body ?

shift pattern forward , reverse ?

converter stall speed ?

They aren't hard to rebuild and the stock stuff can handle a decent power level.

Northern auto for a rebuild kit, wit or some others for bands, get a bolt in sprag if you want it and the TF book.

There is a series on youtube from a shop in Australia that does a performancce rebuild on a 727. Good resource.

Lots of BS black magic regarding building mopar transmissions. They are probably the easiest to get done. Save money on the trans rebuild and spend that money on a great converter that will REALLY make a difference in how the car runs.

I bought a DVD from www.technicalvideos.com and it walks you through a teardown, parts inspection and assembly. It's a very straightforward video and got me through the rebuild of my 727. Only cost me $20 and saved me a bunch of money in the process.

Agreed, John built one for a friend of mine and I have to say his customer service was beyond approach. Even well after the day of sale .
Costs were not much more than I planned for a stock build.
