68 cuda, 360, 4 speed, 73+ k member, power steering. In the instructions it says to install headers from under eath the car and jack up engine 1.5".

Well after pulling the suspension, clutch linkage, loosening the power steering box, jacking up the engine, using crowbars to push it over to the passenger side, and scratching up the ceramic coat on the headers I have realized that there is no way these things are going to squeeze by those fat edelbrock castings.

I assume I have to almost pull the engine, did anyone else run into this problem?

Sean

did you measure and make sure the engine is in the right place as per instructions?
also, you need the car up real high,i had to use blocks of wood under my jackstands to get enough room to angle them in.
I did have to lift the engine a few inches to get them in but removing it wont help as you wont get it back in.
I did it easily myself but a second pair of hands holding them in place when you lower the engine will help alot.

I'm assuming that you are talking about the drivers side header. Like said above, make sure it's up at least a few feet up. I used my 6 ton jackstands at the highest level(be careful). Undo the motor mount bolt from underneath and jack it up like 2 inches. It should go in, and same works for the passanger side. Be careful not to over torque the bolts too b/c those heads will strip out easier than you think. Dont ask how I know

you might put the header in a large garbage bag to keep any contact from scratching anything.

Might help to pop the tortion bar out but you then can't support it on it suspension (wheel or control arm)

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah its the drivers side.

I was reading about the engine placement in the instructions but with the later model K member there is little you can do about changing the orientation of the engine except for using some washers to add clearance.

Love the garbage bag suggestion as well.

I have the car pretty high but only 24" or so, the extent of a typical car jack and the top of my jackstands. The front pipe gets stuck between the power steering pump and eddie heads which are just big blocks of metal. The stock heads indent in this area. I jack the engine up but the trans hits the firewall after 1" of travel and it needs another 1" to go.

I guess I'll drop the back of the trans and use an engine lift and jack the thing up, hopefully it will fit without me taking 20% more of this car apart.

Anger.

Sean

Plastic rips real easy. Wrapping it in a blanket, don't let the wife catch you , would be a better option .

My garbage bags only rip when I am close to the dumpster. Blankets are too thick/cumbersome. A garbage bag (or 2 or 3) cut/wrapped/taped around the pipes works best.

TTI install on my "69 barracuda with stock heads, I couldn't get them on drivers side until I put jack stands on 2 layers of 4X4's ( had Home Depot cut 8'- 4X4 into 1' lengths and had 2 solid supports to place jack stands on). I still had to tilt engine on drivers side. Raising car higher allows headers to obtain different angle to clear obstructions. I hope it works with Edelbrock heads.

PS motor is bolted firmly in place and they come out / go in from the bottom. removing the T bar may be a big key but that takes 5 minutes. and I don't have it up overly high. was disaponted I had to pull the drag link but wow nice to pull starter, lines and stuff now.

Well got the header in. I had to do the following:

1) Remove the starter
2) Remove clutch linkages
3) Remove draglink
4) Remove fan blade (to jack up engine it has to go I got a shroud)
5) Drain radiator to remove lower hose.
6) Remove rear trans support
7) Drop back side of trans 5"
8) get engine lift and pull up engine

Easy...went right in. HAHAHAHAHA...sob! Now I have to put the entire car back together again.

Sean
