Well in an effort to find a rust-free Ramcharger body I drove 10 hours to Georgia. It is definitely about as rust as you could find. But my God man why the heck do people have to hack things up! I understand if the sunroof leaked but really? I'll give the person credit it didn't leak after the plexiglas install. but whoever did the install must have been high on meth with a bad case of Muscle tremors because I can't imagine it was that difficult to get that frame out of that hole! Somebody had just cover this whole mess up with Luan plywood and spray painted it red.

So I guess now I'm looking for a large roof section for a Ramcharger...are the 81-93s all the same?

What is so special about this particular RC?

There are MANY nicer ones out there. By the time you replace the roof, you will have a lot of $$ tied up in it.

Just sayin'.

Especially since you went all the way to Georgia, I can't believe you couldn't find better. Targa top maybe?

I know it's too late but did you try https://www.autotempest.com/ ? Don't know what you were looking for originally (project or driver) but I saw a few on CL thru tempest that didn't look too bad body wise that were a heck of a lot closer than Georgia.

Good luck. weld

At times I wish I lived in Texas where the vehicles are rust free even with 200k on them. Nothing special about this other than price! Up my way and even getting down to VA and TN people think these are worth $$ even with rotted rockers and wheel wells. I might have bit off more than I can chew but figured I could find that portion of the roof up here because ill cut off short of the drip rail, and only just replace whats necessary.

EVERYTHING east of here is stupidly priced.

Everything north of Oklahoma is rotted up to the door handles.

If I drove 10 hours and saw that, I'd be in jail and the seller would be in traction.

Oh and you don't want to live down here in Texas. It's not worth having to learn the Spanish.

Don't kid yourself. Unless it comes from out towards El Paso, it's gonna have some kind of rot issues. I live SE of Houston, around here stuff rots from the top down. Ever see the outer skin of a roof blow off at speed? I have. eek

Take a look at auto tempest. By the time you jack around with trying to fix the one you bought, you may come out ahead even if you have to buy another rig. Maybe you can use this one for parts to fix a different one so it won't be a total loss.

Now that would be a sight to see!

And yes I would not have much luck speaking Spanish. I picked the car up outside of Houston one time and wasn't sure if I took the wrong directions and was on the other side of the Border.

Jacked up as that roof is, if your tub is clean find another with usual lower rot and transplant entire roof. Much less labor cutting posts than panel, some holes in usual spot on donor. I know a couple if ya wanna make it pop top while yer at it. Didn't pay attention to location.

Road trip...Actually, there are about a half dozen, rust free examples for sale out here between Denver and Pueblo. One way plane tickets can be had for under $200, PIT to DIA

Cut it and do a soft top. Topless cruising is great!

Some people would pay more for a Ramcharger with no roof (removable roof).

If ya gonna patch metal, choose where to patch it?

If not at all or minimal, buy clean tub, clean roof, weld together at posts. If willing to do roof skin or rear wheel houses, do top of bed sides with roof to covert hard top to pop top - with right donor.

Walked by one a couple days ago.

Instead of un bolting the clean top (ok usual corner) and running, cut it off at the upper mldg line or just below. Where ya'd cut off the rotted qtrs. Take windshield frame and you have the structure to graft on to at least late 80s.

Or just unbolt roof and use it to fix yours! Maybe $50 for the roof w/ hatch, maybe $50+ for a couple cuts. East PA.

Im digging that idea but the time involved to weld on the removable top or fabricating some soft top is probably out of the question..

What ya think about a bigger sun roof?

Find one with a bigger top hole and possibly that will make the inside mess mostly disappear... the undeside either way shouldnt matter too much i can cover that with headliner.

Your truck, if you want a bigger sunroof, go for it. Its a roof, cut out the bad section, and weld in a replacement roof section. You can fix the soon to be found rusty section above the windshield at the same time.

The green Ramcharger pictured is the older version and the roofs are different. Making the roof removable on the new Ramchargers is a pretty big project. Gene

If you decide to cut more, what do you think about a VW-style pull back ragtop? I don't see Ramchargers listed, but I'd bet they have something that'd fit, and not terribly expensive.

Keep the hard top shell, go with later jeep style retracting cloth roof or similar. Almost frame to frame so bigger than hack that's there. 2/3 roll back?

My tangent: I've seen 80s converted to pop top badly and it's ugly. Not the project here but it could be done right. Take the bed rails ya need.

Go west young man.Arizona and New Mexico are the only places to go IMHO.I bought mine in Phoenix for $3300. It is so rust free that you practically don't need wrenches to remove frame and body bolts.
