Ok have a question about the rear end weight on my 13 durango with a 3.6L I use it to pull my balloon trailer. It is a 5x8 fetherlite trailer. Well the balloon has to go to Des Moines Iowa area on the 1st for annual. Last year I pulled the trailer there to do the annual. The durango did fine except on the hills. Hard pull up and down the hills on I-80. I am throwing around the idea of making a hitch platform to put the basket on it. Then put the envelope bag inside the durango along with my uprights and burner. The entire system loaded for flight weighs approx 450 pounds fueled. Add in the platform I am guessing might weigh 100 pounds. Do you think that might be overloading the rear end. The drive would be approx 290 miles one way. Not sure the weight of the trailer empty but I would guess 300 pounds maybe empty. That is a guess.

Thanks

corey

I would think the balance would be more of a problem then the actual weight although helper air bags might take care of that issue.

I imagine max tongue weight on the hitch would be a clue there.

Pretty sure the owner's manual and/or door sticker will list GVWR, which will give you a max cargo capacity. Cargo including you, passengers, luggage, balloon stuff.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

All of the aftermarket hitch racks that I have seen (mine included) have a weight capacity of 500 lbs. Like Super' said, check your hitch. I think you'll be fine. up

I think it would be both safer and more convenient with the lightweight trailer you have personally. OK to run a little slower up the hills.
