Does anybody know how much the newer iron MP heads (P4876855) weigh compared to original iron 426 heads (like the 2780559)? I've seen the description of heavier castings for porting + durability but haven't been able to find an actual weight value associated with it.

Thanks in advance!

I'm going to guesstimate between 12 and 15 Lbs. from difference between the new bare ones made back in the late 1990s and early 2000 to the original unmolested stock street hemi heads bare after hot tanking them twocents up It may have been even more than that also confused

The last ones they made were very heavy. Sorry I don't have an exact weight.

Thanks for the responses and help. The best I gathered was 5-10 lb/head... if we get our hands on a set we'll weigh them and update the thread.

To the best of my knowledge, the last ones they made had extra material added for porting........ over and above the earlier MP ones........ that had extra material added for porting.

They sure seem quite a bit heavier than the oe ones that came on production 426’s when you’re moving them around in the shop.

The last new Mopar cast iron replacement head I had my hands on had extra metal in it for machining it for dual spark plugs, noticeably heavier than the stock street Hemi iron heads shruggy

I have a pair of the Mopar Performance heads that I just weighed, 77.8 pounds. I believe these are from at least the 2nd vendor that did them. Maybe Zippy can tell by the castings which ones they are. I also had a pair which I believe were made before these which I will post a picture of below. They are definitely different castings than these are, but had the same part number. Unfortunately, I never weighed those.

I've been away from the MP world for several years now, but I can remember the M1 suffix was the nicer, thicker/heavier Dalton casting that for a time came without pushrod holes per SS racers request. MP retooled the head at a huge cost but didn't really tell anyone except racers at the time. Being a humble "Tech guy" I found out about it months after the fact. I was told it had extra material for porting but was never told exactly how much extra.

To my understanding the Dalton castings come from those super expensive production style steel tools and as a result they're some of the more consistent parts out there.

The prior generation came from tooling which was normally used for making prototype parts, and was not really intended for long term use. In my discussions with Engineers, the old tooling was often pointed to as the reason for issues with the parts.

Not to say newer castings are totally immune from the issues all cast parts can have, core shift and porosity can and does happen....but the point being better tooling gives consistently better parts and fewer issues. I don't think anyone would disagree the Dalton castings are pretty clean. Also not to say all the older ones have those issues- most are just fine but they do have less material and are just less consistent.

As far as I know, Super stock/the huge round or oval intake ports they use with brazing and tons of material removal pretty much drove the whole thing.

Wow. Great information, thank you to everyone, especially those of you who went above and beyond to help and weigh parts!!! I owe you guys a beer.

We're new to Mopar and slowly figuring this stuff out... thanks again.
