Hello again,

I need more advice because after solving my starter woes it seems my fuel pump decided to not work. Fuel is not even getting to the fuel filter that is right above the fuel pump. Does anyone know the installation procedure for putting in a stock mechanical fuel pump on a 1964 318? Is there any special steps I may have overlooked? I am thinking I put it in wrong as it worked just fine 2 weeks ago on the old engine. Do you have the prime the pump or fuel line before trying to start it? By the way I just added 3 gallons of gas to the tank just to make sure there was gas that could get to the pump.

As always any advice is greatly appreciated.

Is the carb dry? Fill it and get it running.......the fuel line between the tank and the pump is probably full of air, and has lost its prime. It should pump out, but trying to start it on a dry carb will take forever, if it starts at all.

It should self prime if there aren`t leaks in the line. The sock in tank may be clogged or maybe the new pump is bad. You can run a rubber hose from the fuel pump to a can of gas and see if the tank sock is clogged. They are some of my suggestions.

The pump should self prime, but I have seen times when you had to dump a little gas down the carb to run the motor long enough to get the pump pumping. Sometimes the starter just won't turn the motor fast enough to get it to run.

I have also seen the pump eccentric on the cam wear enough that the pump won't generate full volume.

You said the pump worked in another engine. That would make me suspect the fuel pump eccentric. Sounds to me like the ecentric on the front of the cam shaft is worn or loose, as a result your fuel pump arm will not work....result no fuel being pumped to carb. First I would try all the other suggestion you were given and hope one of them works. Also you could remove the pump and put some gas in a can, drop the input hose from pump into the can and move arm up and down by hand to see if the pump is working. Go about looking at the eccentric as your last ditch effort, because it involves much more work.

(1)prime the carb, start the eng & see if resolved, if not (2)hook gas can to pump inlet, reprime carb, start eng, still no go, the pump or the eccentric & the pump would sure be easier to R&R(& are cheap) even though it just worked before. Things give out at the strangest times but alot of times a pump that is worn just enough that it wont self prime will run OK in daily driving as the lines are not dry.
