Wanting to go a little more cruse friendly so thiinking to swap out my Dana 4:11 for 3:54.

Best place to buy? Do I need the install kit, or can original bearings etc. be used ?

Any tips on installing ?

If your planning on doing more than one, 3 or more, gear swap then buy the pinion depth tool, T&D sells a good set and the bearing pullers and a press to do the work on your own up twocents
if your only wanting to do it once it might be cheaper to have shop do it for you work
Also if you don't have a Mopar factory service manual for your car buy one so you can use it to help you set the rear end up twocents
BTW, I didn't buy or nor have I had to use a case spreader so far after doing 6 or 8 Dana 60 so far up
The FSM calls for between .013 and .015 preload on the carrier bearings, I did hone out a used set of the older bearings on the inner race I had so I could use them for setting up the ring gear backlash and carrier bearing preloads as well as honing the rear pinion bearing up scope
Good luck wrench grin thumbs

I would buy a Motive gear. Not worth doing it yourself unless you will do many more. I've found the pinion depth tool to be inaccurate. Plus you need a press to install bearings. Special tools to remove them without damage. a dial indicator. a hoist is most helpful. Then there is the amount of times to get the preload, pinion, and side shims correct. I've done a few, have a the tools, knowledge in patterns. Still not sure its worth my time.

Bought my stuff from resident supplier, Doctor Diff.

You should go ahead and get a master install kit with new bearings. If you're asking for tips, you may want to go ahead and farm out the job. It's not the most intuitive task and requires a few different tools/tricks.

I did this once and it was a pain to get a proper pattern. I also honed out a used set of bearings.
If you don't have a lift it might be easier to remove the rear.
Unless you want just to learn on how to setup gears it is not worth doing 1 time.

DrDiff is where I bought all my parts from. He is coming out with 3.23 gears for Dana 60 if you want even more of a hiway gear.

I agree with the above recommendations, farm it out unless you want to learn an new skill and buy more tools. I just finished changing the ring and pinion on my Strange S60 from 4.10's to 3.73's. I've done an 8-3/4 in the past but the Dana design is definitely more involved. Some people like to press on bearings but I find it much easier to heat the bearings so that they just slip on while hot. I was able to borrow an induction heater but a small (toaster) oven set at about 200F works well.

Do this first:
1) measure the backlash in several places, write it down.
2). Use gear marking compound and check the pattern, then leave it there.
3) measure or save the shims from the pinion and carrier bearings.

This will help the next user of the ring and pinion to have it quiet and last.
