Hi all,

I've just had a new 440 built, and want to use a lower-stall torque converter than the 3,000 rpm that was in it previously. My engine is making 448 hp @ 5,000 rpm, and 507 lb ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. It's a 440-6, going into my '71 Satellite, and will be street driven 99.9% of the time. I want a stall speed of 2300-2600 rpm, and am looking at the following two converters:

B&M Holeshot 2400

Hughes Performance Street Master

Any opinions, pro or con, would be appreciated. Thanks!

Roger

I put the Street Master in my old wagon when I put the 440 in it. Worked well for me. No complaints at all.

Nice numbers! You want to match your stall to your power band. I'd check with Cope or another custom builder. For your purposes, a custom converter would be in the ballpark price wise with an off the shelf unit. Unless I miss my guess.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'm using a cam from Bob Karakashian (Mr Six Pack), and 2300-2600 was the stall range he recommended. I want it to drive more like a stock '70-71 car, and be more streetable. I really didn't like the 3.000 rpm stall that the prior owner had in the car when I bought it.

Btw, nice Charger, Strokie!

a stock converter will flash at 2300rpm with that engine. I wouldn't use anything much looser than stock.

I used the holeshot 2400 in my bb dart when I first put it together. Seemed to work fine.

Neither...

People spend thousands of dollars on an engine combo. When it comes time to buy the MOST important piece of the puzzle in an auto trans car, they look for the cheapest way out on a converter.

Spend the money on a good converter that flashes hard and is still tight on cruise. A good converter shop can build one and will run from 500-850.

I know plenty of people that put one of the shelf units in a car. They replaced it with a custom ones, with a higher flash, and it ran LOWER rpm at highway speeds. Go figure. It's done all the time now. GOOD Higher stall stuff runs without the 70's stepping on a marshmellow sloppy feel.
