If only the valve body was removed check and see if the manual lever detent ball became dislodged. The shift lever will have no detent feel to it if it fell out.

The diameter is 0.340. I found a second on on the work table and it is 0.245....but I believe this is from another project. When this is resolved, I will need the part number shift shaft seal for the early model valve body, also. Thank you VERY much for your help!!

In a '65 the 11/32" ball is used on the rooster comb detent and as a check ball inside the valve body. If it was found outside the valve body it's likely the detent ball.
P/N for the shaft seal is 2466548.

Does this help? Seen this in my torqueflight manual. Also read the older ones used a ball key to drive the rear pump rotor.

It probably got dropped in the trans at the last overhaul when the case was upside down.
The only two loose 11/32" balls in a '65 are those already mentioned but there are some staked into the reaction shaft support and the rear pump housing. Check to see if one of those popped out.

A large check ball is used between the output shaft and rear pump gear. That is what I would check, but not sure why it would have fallen out? My post regarding the size of the ball used to drive the rear pump rotor was aimed at this post.
