I'm overhauling a very early model 727(1965). When I removed the valve body from the case a loose check ball fell out. I cannot find where to re-install it before I finish button up the trans....somebody, please help me. And yes the trans has a rear pump.

A large check ball is used between the output shaft and rear pump gear. That is what I would check, but not sure why it would have fallen out?

If only the valve body was removed check and see if the manual lever detent ball became dislodged. The shift lever will have no detent feel to it if it fell out.

What is the diameter of the ball?

The diameter is 0.340. I found a second on on the work table and it is 0.245....but I believe this is from another project. When this is resolved, I will need the part number shift shaft seal for the early model valve body, also. Thank you VERY much for your help!!

In a '65 the 11/32" ball is used on the rooster comb detent and as a check ball inside the valve body. If it was found outside the valve body it's likely the detent ball.

P/N for the shaft seal is 2466548.

The check ball is in the rooster comb........it's a mystery to me. Can you cross the Chrysler part number over to Timken or National as the local Dodge dealer looks at me like I've got a third eye when I give him the Mopar number. Everywhere I look has the Timken 8609 seal listed for the much larger shift shaft,

Does this help? Seen this in my torqueflight manual. Also read the older ones used a ball key to drive the rear pump rotor.

Thanks ratroaster, but the check ball was loose when I removed the valve body from the case. It fell out when I removed the pan and was about to remove the entire valve body assembly.

It probably got dropped in the trans at the last overhaul when the case was upside down.

The only two loose 11/32" balls in a '65 are those already mentioned but there are some staked into the reaction shaft support and the rear pump housing. Check to see if one of those popped out.

OOPS..... the transmission is together. I wonder if it is even possible for the one from the rear pump to get into the interior of the transmission. I think I'll stick to much later models in the future. When I got this one it was a basket case and missing the front pump.

The rear pump drive ball is much smaller than the one you have loose.

My post regarding the size of the ball used to drive the rear pump rotor was aimed at this post.

It would be great if I could find a picture or diagram showing the relationship of this ball within the rear pump.

Look at John’s last post - at 5 O’clock is a radiused groove - that’s where the ball engages the rotor. The output shaft has a radiused recess where the ball sets.

A dab of grease holds the ball while you lower the output shaft into the govorner support.

Thank you VERY much, John Kunkel and Transman as well as several others. The mystery is solved. It was the drive ball for the rear pump. How it got out and into the trans pan is not known. Someone before me must have bee inside before I got it. Thanks again!!!

But, as stated earlier, the pump drive ball is 1/4" (.250"), you said the loose ball was .343". confused
