Long story short, I have both and I'm not sure I need both. Both are very similar in their current build state (new upgraded brakes & suspension, non running and needing paint). Both weigh about the same and will cost about the same to finish. Obviously selling one would get the other finished by the Spring Fling Speed Festival. Value wise in their current state they are both worth about the same. AMX means only talking one kid(they're 10 &12), or the wife, to a car event. The Demon would probably worth less when finished and isn't as unique.

I plan on running a few track days (Willow Spring, Thunderhill, Sonoma, Laguna Seca), along with some local autocrosses, the Viriginia City Hillclimb, and some cruising during Hot August Nights, etc.

So if you had to pick, which one would you keep?

Keep?

Brent,I'm not sure if the short wheelbase of the AMX would be an advantage or disadvantage on a roadcourse, Thats where I would start. I would see which platform would perform the best for what I plan on using it for. There are aftermarket suspension kits and parts to make both cars perform, but the A body Mopar would have more parts and kits to choose from. The AMX as stated is limited to two passengers too.

Dangina, there used be a really good video of it on Musto's "Big Muscle/ House of Muscle" but for some reason its gone or has been made private. Yes, thats what I plan to build it like.

Good points Pete. The Demon would make for a better touring car.

My ideas for both would be a TEAM AMX tribute and a what if 71 Demon Trans Am car.

I think it'd be easier & less spendy to set up the Demon than the AMX. AMX I think still had kind of a wacky ft suspension, parts in general harder to find. Plus side, they're rare enough that they're unique.

The Penske/RWR TransAm Javelin we restored & ran in vintage events had fabricated spindles & such, looked like some Ford stuff in there as well; I'm sure they didn't do all that because they were bored...another thing if your AMX plan would include AMC power is they had oiling problems until they went to a dry-sump with a lot of scavenge & feed work. One of the guys in Vintage TA with an older Javelin that can't run a dry sump (wasn't legal for '68 cars) has had problems just like they did back in the day.

Only performance advantage to the AMX is autocross. Short wheel base is not a big advantage anywhere else. Engine parts are pricey. Suspension parts are pricey. Body parts are pricey. Anything in the interior is pricey.

But they are bad ass cool.

If image and buzz is your goal, the AMX, if seat time and driving 9 tenths is the objective, hammer down on the Demon.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

I'd recommend selling the AMX, it's a rare car and hard to get parts for. The Demon seems to fit your need to accommodate your family and A body parts are still fairly plentiful. Which one is going to be harder to replace if you crash it on the track? If you want to build a hardcore track car then sell them both and buy the best Viper/Corvette you can afford, gut it, add cage, brake upgrades, and let it all hang out. twocents

Demon, hands down. Duplicate what was done to the Red Brick, but keep the back seat in case you want to take the whole family somewhere.

They are not interchangeable.

The AMX has the HUGE short wheel advantage for pylon autocrossing.. and distinguished history unique to its own.... not so easily replaceable.

The Demon is cool... easier to work on with more readily available replacement parts.

Mopar or no car?

I'd keep both cars... always been a fan of the AMX cars!

voted for the demon--but personally like the amx more---have you read the amc history at the silver state challenge? its on the amxperience web site----i have met jim weyan? that runs the amx---think he is topped out at 176mph----the javelin has run 202 mph (silver state) and 222 mph at bonneville---the amc,s will cost more to get going and to maintain.....

I'm going to say Demon due to parts availability.

In a Mopar Action awhile ago they had an interview with an engineer who played a hand in the original Chrysler and later AMC SCCA race cars. I recall reading that the AMC front ends needed a complete reconstruct to make them road race worthy. Guy made new Mopar style spindles and changed a bunch of stuff.

I do like those Mark Donohue Javelins. An AMX with a throwback paint scheme would be cool.

My AMX has a kit that eliminates the front trunnion set up in favor of an A arm and QA1 coilovers. My plan is to swap an LS & 6pd in it, as building an AMC motor was never the plan.

Good points about the ease of replacement metal, considering I practically have another Demon in spare parts. Build plan for the Demon will be a "what if" Dodge raced a Demon in SCCA/ Trans Am for 1971.

Thank you for the replies and voting.

Update: It looks like the Demon is going to be the one staying.
