Tucson AZ,
Looking to buy an RB distributor and am curious what ignition setup you guys are running on your stuff. I've used the Mallory Unilites for years but was thinking about giving an MSD Pro Billet a shot mostly because I already have a new 6AL, Blaster 2 coil and MSD wires laying around. I know some of the MSD stuff has given people problems over the years but I think that probably applies to the Mallory's and every other brand if you look long enough. Anyhow, just looking for some info and feedback before I commit to anything. Thanks Guys!

Stock Mopar magnetic pickup recurved with a big gold MSD race box, 404B,404C, 7,7C,7A,7ALA and now a MSD Grid with a non programmable digital 7 with the proper col for the MSD race boxes, not a big yellow Accel or any other coil designed for a points type ignition tsk
I've also used both of the MSD distributors with good results also thumbs
The Mopar brand of ECU kind of scare me so I step up for better thumbs

I've used the stock stuff with good results. Currently running MSD crank trigger with a 440 source distributor. Though in this case the internal electronics aren't being used. The quality of the unit itself is nice. Near had an issue with the cap or rotor in 6 years.

Stock Chrysler magnetic pickup distributor that I rebuilt and recurved feeding an MSD 6AL. Reliable, cheap and works great.

Mopar Performance distributors in two big blocks, MSD6al+msd coil in one, Frankenstein GM HEI/Ford TFI coil in the other.

The Frankenstein deal surprised me, I did not expect it to work as well as it does. I have an external soft touch rev limiter I can wire up, and might A/B test it with a 6 series msd someday.

Crane HI-6 box w/ either a recurved MP OEM-type electronic w/ vac advance, or an oddball MP/Mallory billet mechanical-only piece I picked up years ago. Not sure there's any performance difference between the distributors, but the MP/Mallory is easier to adjust the advance curve... probably tighter tolerances in the shaft runout, too.

Engine is a low deck 452, probably Dan Costello's (RIP) last Mopar engine.
Recurved MP distributor with standard magnetic pickup, vacuum advance still hooked up running manifold vacuum. MSD 6AL box. Lucas sport coil. Works great.

Last setup used a distributor from FBO that they curved & put their limiter plate in; spendy, but nice piece.
Otherwise it's been curved MP units except for the old tach-drive in the dragrace car.
All with vacuum advance except the race car.
Rest of the deal has been MSD6AL, F150 coil, usually Taylor wires, usually Champion plugs.

Tucson AZ,
Doesn't seem to be alot of reason to spend the big bucks on the MSD distributor from the sounds of it. Now I just need convince myself to jump back to a basic electronic distributor instead of the Unilites that I've been running for years. I need to buy a distributor for this project anyhow so maybe it's time to try something new, or not...work I hate change. laugh2

When you pull it apart to clean it, most likely the nylon bushing at the bottom of the housing will likely be crystallized and break when you drive out the roll pin. Fortunately there is a Hillman bushing sold as a pair for 99 cents at Lowes in the nut and bolt/hardware section.

I run a Mallory race dist with no vacuum advance in my 63 because I got it for a great price. I still use the orange Mopar ECU I bought around 1999 because my sons car did use it and ran just as good with it as it does with MSD. I like it a lot as the mech advance is all adjustable real easy. On my sons Dart I run a factory B-block dist I just recurved with his MSD box. Honestly if I was buying a new dist today and money was no problem I would most likely just go with MSD. Ron
