So the low/rev band comes off slowly. Why is that any different than 2/3 overlap? I've seen the rear wheels stop on the hoist on a low rpm 2/3 shift. I've never witnessed that with a standard valve body on a manual 1/2 shift. If there is overlap, it can't be much. Am I missing something here? Commenting on the other post; Which thrust washers? How did you determine that on/off the throttle caused any wear? 2/3 overlap is the opposite of 2/3 flare. You would have to have a heck a lot of overlap to kill the high gear clutch pack causing a 2/3 flare.

The analogy using brakes - applying them wears them much, much faster than releasing them. That’s the only point being made.

Applying a clutch or band wears them much faster than releasing them.

Diminishing clutch/band capacity (holding ability) causes very little if any wear whereas trying to increase capacity (application) has always been a balancing act between shift quality and durability.

The Op will wear himself out (and his shift linkage) trying to wear the L/R band out by manually doing 1-2 shifts.

The thrust washers between the input and output shafts. I have seen them beat out bad enough to keep the clutch pack from pressuring up. And every time I have seen it, it is in a car that the guy lifts between the 1-2 shift. All the slack goes one way, then it is slammed the other way.

Not something you see much when normal forward thrust is maintained when shifting whether manual or auto. But something that can and will happen with certain types of abuse.

I have seen it often enough that I always use A&A's Torrington bearing in there.

The 2-3 overlap is caused by both the clutch pack and the band trying to hold at the same time. Something has to give and additional wear is unavoidable. It is usually the clutches that wear the most until there is enough additional clearance that slows clutch application and causes a flair.

The 727 I manually shifted with the Slapstik had to be rebuilt, but it made 50,000 with my abuse, and the odometer showed 125,000. I was OK with that. The Buick I had before the Plymouth had to have its trans removed and replaced 3 times in 10,000 miles. I'll take the 727 any day. Gene

I pretty much always manually shift 2-3 with the A518 in my Dodge Dart.
Sometimes I also downshift 3-2 coming up to a corner, but I try to match engine rpm with what the transmission wants at that time.

How do you rev-match downshift with an automatic?

From 3rd (Drive), put it in neutral, feed a tad more throttle and pull it into 2nd gear again.
But that's an occassional thing I sometimes do when driving and when I just need to slow a bit when knowing I have to accelerate again shorty after.

Not trying to be a smart a**, but I think the term is 'flare'.
Interesting and informative discussion, thanks experts.

Why do you have a car?

Why don't you drive it like a drag racer? If it breaks, fix it.

If having fun with your car is too hard on it, park it. Then you'll never have to fix it.

Do you want to save it for the next guy? DO you go to your grave knowing that you could have had fun, but by gosh those thrust washers and rear band are still in great shape!

I find this one of these amazing and amusing questions, one that shows up here with some regularity.

See you in the funny papers.

The thing that gets me is the floor mats and the seat covers that are never removed. What are people saving this stuff for? Often the seats and the carpet look great in the Pull A Part until some fool throws some greasy part on them. Gene
