I would still use Rit dye and salt if I was doing a set again.

I used Rit also. Washed them first by hand with a scrub brush and Dawn, and then by putting them in pillow cases to keep from having them beat up the inside of the washing machine. Boiled them in a pan like directions on the package said with whatever salt the instructions said to use. I changed my belts from green to black and the color change worked out perfect, other than having the sewn on labels turn black along with some of the soft rubber turning from clear to black. Belts came out even colored and flexible.

No, you can't. They are stitched on in a specific safety related manner------in fact, the whole aspect of boiling / dying them voids original safety (so they say) but what are ya gonna do?

Buckles can be removed if disasembled but having done that to ONE I can tell you you'll probably cause more damage than if you leave them on.

Now if someone can explain how to refinish '68/69 buckles that would be awesome !!!
