Wall Street Journal has an article saying that the International Marine Organization is forcing Ocean Shipping Companies to use low sulfur diesel for SO2 gas reduction reasons.

This is raising the profit margins on ULSD so high that refiners are willing to take less for the gasoline that they must make. Asian refiners are already selling gasoline below cost. Typically 46% of a barrel of crude oil becomes gasoline.

It is not news that “Tree Huggers” distort markets.

It does seem rare that this distortion results in cheap gasoline for USA.

It should not be overlooked that the vast increase in USA “light sweet crude” from fracking also is a key development that makes possible both ULSD for ships and low price “byproduct” gasoline.

most of the world is in a global recession. not much demand when times are tight. A bad Recession is on the horizon here too

I thought diesel/fuel oil was the by-product of making gasoline?

I don't doubt that it is, but we'll ride it through a lot better than our Western counterparts on the fact that our economy is more diversified and that we don't tax fuel to the moon. If I were in France it would cost me $7.00 a gallon. I was able to fill up last week for $1.90. First time under $2.00 in years.

We exported more crude this month than we brought in. First time since 1973, or as far back as we've been keeping records.

Thank you fracking!

it irritates me to no end that every time someone leaves a real STINKY fart, the price of gas goes up 20cents. oil companies make fortunes whether the barrel price is up or down, and us peons pay the price. it's about time we get a [tiny] break on a commodity most of us rely on to just live our lives.

I don't care why the prices are down, as long as they are down. Now, if we could only get them to stay down for awhile.

I have to get gas today, and with my fuel rewards discount, I think I'll be in the $1.75 range. Santa4

You should be concerned about Federal and State petroleum taxes. The government makes FAR, FAR, FAR more money on petroleum than the oil companies. And they never even have to touch it.

I feel SO much better about fuel taxes now that I am repeatedly hearing that all of these minor taxes on fuels with various amounts of carbon dioxide emissions will soon be replaced with a HUGE CARBON TAX but that ALL of these now entirely fair and just carbon taxes will be refunded to us once a year by our trusty government.

Still 2.50ish here, but we get hammered with taxes on fuel in PA.

Still about $4.00 here for 91 octane at the local stations but Regular is about $3.25 at Costco.

The low sulphur requirement for ships is still a year away?
https://shipandbunker.com/news/world/340...ms-more-options
I've read this is going to cause major problems in the shipping industry as refineries around the world aren't configured to refine the amount of low sulphur bunker fuel that will be required.
The low prices of gasoline today is primarily because crude oil prices are low. And seasonal demand means gasoline prices are typically lowest in winter.
Here in my fine state, the incoming administration is chomping at the bit to increase revenues to perfume our pig of a financial situation, so proposals like legalizing pot, more casinos and increasing gas taxes a "more reasonably" 20-30 cents additional a gallon are top priorities. eyes

What you call a by product depends on what you want and what you don't want. If you want diesel any thing other than diesel is a byproduct.
