I am thinking of putting fuel injection on my 440. What is the best kit? The engine is a 440 .030 over. 9.75:1 compression. Iron open chamber heads ported using the old MP templates. MP 484 purple stick with 1.6:1 roller rockers. Performer RPM intake. Holley 800 DP carb. Timing is 38 total, 21 initial and 17 mechanical.
I had an old Holley ProJection on it and it ran terrible, it could not learn the low vacuum at idle. Looking for something that can learn my engine combo.
Fuel pump is a Mallory 140 pump with a return regulator.
Thanks Chris.

what's your budget? best is really subjective, are you looking for self learning? most functionality? easy to bolt on? cheapest?
fitech is really popular its tbi, sniper maybe a little better software wise, but both will depend on how good the install is.
port injection is better than TBI but way more expensive to implement and has a lot of other options and tuning scenarios you can get into, coil near plug, sequential vs batch fire etc.

Go with the Holley Sniper, either by itself for $1K or buy the one that includes the fuel system for $1260, but you better buy it before the Holley Days promotion ends at the end of December.
The Sniper handles low vacuum engines very well because you can connect with a laptop and tune the low RPM area yourself. Most "self-learning" systems can't do that.

I was just looking at that at work. Price I saw was $1280 with the fuel system.

that fuel system is not complete. You will need a way to feed that pump as steady source of solid fuel. EFI systems die if you try to pump air and the stock tank isn't baffled.

I forgot to say I have a 45 gallon fuel tank with a 3/8" pickup at the bottom of the tank and it is baffled.
This engine is in my 1978 Ramcharger.

When I put TBI on my 87 Diplomat any time I got below half a tank it would suck air on hard turns or stops, killing the engine. Anywhere close to a quarter tanks and it was virtually undriveable.
I ended up going with a surge tank fed by the original mechanical fuel pump with the TBI return also plumbed into the surge tank with an over flow going back to the vehicle tank. This was back before all the fancy stuff they have today. That Holley Hydramat looks real interesting, even if it's pricey.

I guess I just need to decide on what kit, leaning towards the Sniper. Then upgrade my in cab isolated fuel pressure gauge to 100 psi and my under hood gauge to 100 psi. I already have 3/8" ss supply and return lines.

Put the Atomic on a stroked 360 (408) runs great. It’s very tuneable with the hand held. Bought it before the Holly Sniper came out. If I was doing it today I would go with the sniper.
I went with the Super Sniper system for my 511 build. I already had a good fuel delivery system and I liked the idea of better drivability vs overall performance. All in I'm under 2K and that includes the matching distributer, ECU and coil. My engine is 400/511, Trick Flow heads, 10:1, 246, 248 hyd roller, and either Holley SD intake or Trick Flow intake. I want to use the Trick Flow intake but hood clearance will determine what's finally used. I don't have any HP/torque numbers. Engine goes on the dyno Monday

If you get the Super Sniper you can get rid of the fuel pressure gauges. The Super Sniper can data log up to three pressure sensors so you can track fuel pressure and oil pressure with the Sniper.
I'd also recommend adding the Hyperspark distributor with the Sniper. That way you can control the ignition timing from the Sniper. Check out the Sniper + Hyperspark article in the Jan issue of Hot Rod.

Thanks guys for all the info. I will look into the Hyperspark. I had a MSD system but the boxes kept crapping out. Went with a DUI distributor and really like it.

The Sniper EFI unit will control your ignition system, with plug-ins available for HEI and most aftermarket distributors. You can also run it without ignition control.
