2 of the expected 72 F35s arrived down under today, a massive commitment for a country the size of the USA mainland and only 25 million people. Any F35 experts on the forum, love to hear your comments on the new planes. The Royal Australian Air Force will be retiring the aging FA18s and they served us very well especially on the numerous overseas commitments.

I think the reviews on the F35 vary widely depending on who writes the review - it was the same with the F22's. Not too many liked the F22's from what I've read. Hard to beat an F15 in any department excluding stealth.

The F-111's have been scrapped from the Australian inventory for quite a number of years now.
They took the major components out of them, then they actually buried what was left of them.

Any particular reasons why they weren't recycled? Technology that couldn't be economically removed or risk anyone seeing, even at the recyclers? Seems like practice targets would have been a useful alternative, then buried and or recycled.

Ya, For whatever reasons Australia determined that was left of the fuselage, and large components, were constructed of environmentally toxic materials, and was determined to leave them they way they were, and just bury them whole, in large pits, in the designated landfill.

Australian big wigs, bean counters, at work, down under.

If you would like to know more, use GOOGLE.
There are numerous written stories out there, why Australia did what they did with them.
That's how i learned lots more about them.

If i remember correctly it had lots to do with asbestos in those F-111's.

There are a few F1-111s in museums around Australia, we have one not far from me in the Fighter Jet Museum in Adelaide South Australia.

Yeah, they were earmarked for disposal to honor the terms of the original contract and ensure that any sensitive parts didn’t fall into the wrong hands.

By "retiring" you mean sell to us here in Canada. Our government has repeatedly bungled and botched the procurement process that was originally supposed to be for an order for F35's. Now we're buying Australia's old junk so we can keep patching along our fleet of CF-18's that entered service in the early-mid 80's.

The Red Chinese apparently were able to steal plans for the
F-22,
unchosen F-23 and
F-35.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/...blic-debut.html

One wonders how their J-20 will do against the F-35,
especially since they have announced plans to build 4X as many
J-20s as we will will have in
our USA combined fleet of F-22 and F-35s.

Regardless of how well the F-35 does as more bugs get worked out,
It will be an all time example of a vast cost over-run military project.

“Quantum Radar” may soon make the stealth features far less advantagous.

Same thing happened with the ill-fated CF-105. Your government really blew it there.

Yes...the F35 is loud. Been working along Nellis AFb for almost 2 yrs now. The F22 is really cool watching it fly but still got the love for the f15...always thought they could update the air frame and new avionics and it would sit give almost anything in the sky hell.

Nellis has changed their flight patterns ...taking off towards the northeast and the fighters do a hard bank to the left to head towards the range. They are only a few hundred feet off the ground as they scream over the Drag strip.

At least the Aussie aircraft are meticulously maintained and upgraded. Usually New Zealand gain our cast offs, never knew Canada got our stuff as well.
