Most likely a rear clutch issue or the rear clutch sealing rings. Unfortunately, there's probably a good chance the trans will have to come out again. Did the builder check the clutches with air during assembly?

i have a feeling it could be something with the input shaft. the trans is a 78 from an e58 cop car no lockup and had a shift kit in it before, i ran it for years till it got a little soft then pulled it. upon inspection it needed an input shaft so i brought a core trans from my barn an he built it up from there. it seems to me there was change in that area around that time. i hope he did not miss that? but i will pull it to make sure. sucks but it is what it is.

A mismatch of the input shaft and/or the reaction shaft support is a distinct possibility, they changed the rear clutch apply circuit in '78.

after it did not work i read up on some possible causes and found that which made me think of what we did to it..... oh well i will pull it and we will see. i may just bring another one that i have and get it done too. this guy has built a lot of 727's for me with no issues so i can't complain too much stuff can happen. i will post back here once i know whats up i will try to get it pulled this week and get it to him before the weekend. i am trying to get this car done so i can store it for the winter as i need mu shop back!

EGGuCATE RR ? ... lol ..... now a 904 I totally furrget but a 727 has a BIG RUBBER Oring that can roll over if tooo high of air pressure is used OR if it isn’t changed on a rebuild and is worn out or brittle from heat. Now HONESTLY RR .. I have not seen the inside of a 727 (I had to think about this) since 1996 ..,, damn 22 years ! ...

I don't know what you consider to be "tooo high" of air pressure, but I routinely use 90 psi for air checks theorizing that it's better to have a failure on the bench than in the car. And I add a squirt of ATF to the passage before air testing to ensure a better piston seal.

one time I assembled the rear clutch wrong and put the piston spring upside down = no forward gears

John you're the man (as always!) & that is what I was wanting to be edumacated on as I had completely forgotten about doing the air checks & I for sure want to know that everything is good (as much as I can) while I am still on the bench.

RR ,.. that’s basically what I said except I didn’t mention specific psi. And I have had a NEW seal roll over on a air and atf port fill check once.
