Ok, see the attached photo. I have been looking for a driver's side quarter for years now, finally got one from a Valiant. But several big problems. It is only from the driver's door to the gas filler hole. AND it is only from the rocker up to the bottom of the window (in the back-seat). That is, it doesn't include the section leading to the roof.

Question: What would you do?

1) Keep looking.
2) Use the partial quarter as a patch panel, replacing only the section outlined in the photo.
3) Replace the entire section, which BTW, also includes the wheel well.
4) Sell the car.
5) Run the car over a cliff.
6) Kill yourself.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Tim...

Can you be more specific? Is this a salvage yard?

Anyone else have an opinion?

you are wanting to replace the quarter on the car in the photo??

It appears to be fairly rust free.. I would repair that quarter in a heartbeat over replace with a partial panel... you will have just as much work ,, if not more when it comes to straitening out your mud.

Tim,
How is your door jamb? The damage looks as if it is pretty close to this area. If the jamb is not damaged this will make the repair easier. It is possible to replace a piece of the quarter but as stated, it will take some time and patience to get the repair seams block sanded and smooth. If you decide to do it this way take your time and it should be fine in the end. Good luck to you.

Yes, it is definitely rust-free!

Thanks for the input!

The door jam is fine! The old door sealed perfectly. But I was able to pick up two doors and two front fenders for a song!

Ok, so it looks like the choice is between pounding out the dent as best as possible and filling it, or replacing as much of the panel as possible from the donor panel...

I'm pretty good at cutting out the old and patching it with the new. But time-wise, I guess it could be the same amount of blocking sanding...

Again thanks for the input!

A few questions:

1) What is the condition of the wheel lip on that
damaged quarter panel - is it rusted?
show pictures...

2) can you show a picture of the door jam
3) also show a picture of the door closed
I want to see how the door lays vs. quarter panel/ rocker panel etc...

4) Is there rust on the bottom of this quarter
in front of the wheel well to the rocker panel
and /or behind the wheel well to the tailpanel?

Recommendation:

(Condition 1)

IF and I mean IF and ONLY IF there is not
structural damage (I.e frame bent don't rule this
out yet!)

AND

(Condition 2)
IF AND ONLY IF the lower portion of the quarter panel from door jam all the way back
including all of the wheel well lip IS NOT RUSTED OUT

I would recommend repairing it.
That piece is repairable... IMHO..
providing both condition above are absolutely TRUE.

Otherwise if condition 1 is not true,
your going to have to put that car on a frame
machine and pull it anyway...

if condition 2 is true... it's not worth it
to repair it UNLESS you simply can't find another
donor car.. Which I believe you! is difficult
but not totally impossible...

You really can't determine condition 1 without
seeing how the door lays( all the stuff should be in the door (ie. weight) when the door is closed.
and you should also check how the glass rolls up and down and seats... Obviously you have the car disassembled so this is hard to assess...

How did the car get damaged?

No I'm not indicting you!
bodyshops will want to do what happended so they can "reverse the damage" ...

ONE MAJOR NOTE:

IF the frame is bent. Your chances of getting ANY body shop to straighten a 65 mopar are slim to NONE! (If you find one you are a lucky man! )

But If the frame is bent I would say
Don't fool with it...
save every other piece (INCLUDING The passenger side quarter panel if its still good) and save it all for another project car (same year/model etc)...

DO NOT ASSUME your frame is NOT BENT!
DO NOT REMOVE A QUARTER PANEL ON A CAR WITH A BENT FRAME...(or any other structural sheet metal)

You'll never get the new one back on right!

BEST OF LUCK either way to you...

Ok, sorry for the delay. The car was sideswiped. No frame damage. That is, all of the damage is above the frame (and to the right of the door jam). The door closes fine, and lines up nicely.

And after further review, there is some rust on the wheel lip and to the left of wheel well (on the damaged panel).

I can't take any pictures at the moment, since a friend has my camera...

Ok, another question. If I cut the panel (as shown) or a portion thereof, has anyone ever used the Eastwood Company weldless panel repair instead of tack-welding?

I have a buddy that can weld, but I didn't like the way he did a previous job for me...

Anybody?

Tim...
