I always dipped the pistons in oil to flood the rist pins, wiped off the excess and sprayed the rings with WD-40, then installed.
it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

If oil distribution is limited to pre-oiling there will be no oil above the oil ring. I lube everything lightly, so there is at least a film on every part like what would be there in a running engine, but will not drown the thing in oil. I can see where many,many,mnay years ago rings and things were crude enough it would be a good idea since they needed a fair amount of break in, but not with todays parts and machine work.

So, Mercedes-Benz, builds thousands upon thousands of engines every year and puts a warranty on them. AND someone thinks the way they put engines together isn't a good idea?

What does Mercedes know... hand built naturally aspirated 378 cu in engine 622 hp with a full Warranty spinning to 8000 RPM.
