Hi! I am looking to buy a battery charger and tender for a 1970 Plymouth GTX. Any good recommendations for a decent price? Sorry, if this is in the wrong section. It's going to be a long winter. penguinhat

it kind of depends on what battery you are running.

like agm would be slightly different than a standard wet cell battery.

I used to like batery tender brand, but found that when they don't work the company charges you to send it in and back to yourself under warranty work.

so I switched to schumaker brand.

for agm battery I use ctek brand chargers for that kind of battery.

but it is 20 to 30 for the shumaker brand and 100 for the ctek.

I bought TWO diff chargers ... One with a fast charge for activating the battery WITH like a 10 and 5 amp setting THEN one as a tender only. The digital one at Wally World is a good one there.

WE did use Battery Tenders but have switched to Optimate smart chargers. They charge all types of batteries. Optimate 3 is the least expensive and basic. We also have a couple of Optimate 6's.

We had 1 Battery Tender short out internally and actually melted its case..
We called Battery Tender and reported this event, they sent me a new one no charge. Then 2 weeks later they called me back and said their engineers wanted the defective unit back for investigation.. Too late already thrown into the dumpster.

Anyway after that dangerous incident with Battery Tender I found a device called Battery Minder, works much better than the Battery Tender. Plus it has an instantaneous high-voltage spike charge to burn off the sulphate than can form on the cells and destroy a battery..

I highly recommend the Battery Minder, I use (3) of them no problems..

I'm using the Schumacher battery tenders. I have 2 types, one will charge both conventional and AGM batteries. Cost is mid $20s.
Several of them are 3-5 years old & still working perfectly; I've had the Black & Decker units but they didn't last as long.

I have been using the Batt Tender Plus for 20 yrs. My first one wore out after 11 yrs. Now Im on my second one. I have this connected during the entire winter and when its parked in the garage in the spring/summer. I like it and it does charge agm or gel batt. I do use a Ctek for my Honda generator. I like them both. Im sure the others mentioned are good to. Don't get a cheap one. Lots of reviews if you check online on other units mentioned.

My Craftsman "microprocessor controlled" 12V charger fried 2 batteries before I junked it. One was an Optima and the other was a regular lead/acid 12V battery. Charging overnight left batteries sizzling by morning. Expensive lesson. My Schumacher works fine.

i don't trust any kind of tender. Way too much chance of something inside going bad and causing problems. For years I've disconnected my batteries and charge them once or twice over winter.

The Deltran brand battery tender is good, we sell them at work and have had no complaints.

I also like the Optima Battery Charger. I have the smaller version and it works very well on any type of battery.

Battery Minder works. I have used Battery Tender, Schumacher. And others. Then I found this one. The desulfator works. My last Battery Tender was junk. Car would sit for a month or 2 on the Tender and I still had to charge Battery. Found Battery Minder and no more problems. I threw out the junk Tender and started using the Minder, same Battery and never had a problem again. Going on 3 years same Battery.

Just my $0.02... wink

I have Mac tools maintainer/charger. It will do 6 or 12 volt, agm or standard batteries. It seems to work good. I started just using it for a day every couple weeks if I don't run the car instead of leaving it on all the time.

More info is google "Top 10 battery maintainers." This can help with research. Then consider what's on top on most of these articles.
The Battey Minder looks pretty good based on their website and sellers. Not much in any of these articles though. I would not mind trying Battery Minder, but only after my Battery Tender wears out. Im on a Repro Mopar agm batt by Turbostart I have owned since 2010 and battery is doing great on the Tender.
Only other charger I like is my Ctek that I use on my generator. It has a selector for the smaller M/C batt. My generator has a wet cell unit and so far that batt is 6 yrs old.

I have been using DelTran battery tenders for years with good results and no issues. I always keep one on my Harley and my play cars while they are parked.
