Hey all,

I took apart my car door (1971 Satellite) the other day and noticed that the plastic liners that were behind the door panels are gone. I've had the car for 31 years and I know they were there before I had some body work done, so I assume the shop lost the liners. Does anyone know if there's a place that repros those things? It was a pretty thick plastic, maybe plain old sheets of plastic are available?

I bought some heavy clear plastic from Home Depot for a home project once to use as a vapor barrier after insulating between the studs. That would probably work.

Like he said, just get some thick plastic sheet and cut it to proper shape. I found that 3M spray adhesive in the right places worked the best. Just in case you didn't take it apart, the bottom gets tucked into the slots at the bottom of the door to direct any water in there instead of the floorpan.

I saw some listed on e-bag! Not sure what the price was.

Where do you buy the same black goop the factory used to hold the plastic in place, and what is the proper name for it?

I use 3M Part# 08578 strip calk.Available at most parts stores.

Just curious, but would a spray rubber work as well?

Too messy...I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive.

I had an open tube of 3M 08509 Bedding & Glazing Compound (the butyl rubber stuff for our windshields and back glasses) so I just ran a bead around the areas I wanted the plastic to stick to, and pressed it into place

The Weatherstrip Adhesive will stick very effectively, but it may be hard to ever remove the plastic again without destroying it. Same for double-sided foam tape, or contact cements...

Not sure if you understood what I meant. I meant would it work covering the back of the door panels in the spray rubber? I would think that would be much easier and do a better job of waterproofing the door panels.

The plastic acts as a water barrier and a wind stop. It keeps the rain water that gets past the window seals from getting to the door panels, then redirects that water back inside the door so it can drain out the bottom of the door and not run inside to the panel and inside the car. It also helps keep outside air from entering the passenger compartment through the doors.

Our pampered cars can probably survive well without redirecting the water back into the doors to drain out the bottom, they likely won't see many hard rains. If you can live with not having everything as factory equipped, the do it your self process will work just great. Gene

Thanks. I guess I would prefer to have the water directed out of the car. I would think that if the car were washed, the water would leak onto the floorboards, eventually causing rust to form. I could make my own, but my Duster didn't have any when I got it, so I don't have a template to work with.

You can use the door panel as a start template and trim it down as needed
