Apparently someone can't understand the article.

From the article, "elderly people who didn’t have the strength to manually open their garage door". My MIL falls into that category, but according to your genius thinking it's only because she is stupid that she couldn't get the door open without power.

I think we know who the stupid one is.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Yes i heard about this a few months ago after the big fires> We sell a lot of those and they work well but the batteries don't last but 2 to 3 years.

Just another papercut to add to the couple thousand making the State the much more expensive to live in. All because five people died in a State of 40 million? I'm not trying to sound unfeeling here, but damn.

If my wife or mema didnt have the strength it takes to open one of my five doors that would only be for the fact of they didnt have enough strength to make it to the door.

But I do understand some of the newer, bigger doors could be a challenge for many. Scratch that.....

Look at there "How to vid" funny.

These GD openers are a godsend for people who are handicapped or just plain not strong enough to open some of the those heavy carriage type doors.

Many times during stormy weather when the power goes out i will be called to a customers home to open and then sometimes go back and close the same garage door at night time if the power is still not back on. I use to wonder how a grown man in perfect health could not know how to open his own door. Almost always this was at a very wealthy neighborhood and the owner just didn't want to get his hands dirty, plain and simple. eyes

The Ryobi opener that we installed has a 18 volt battery back that plugs in.No power no problem. It uses the battery and charges it also.I have batterys here that are at least 6 or 7 years old and still as good as new.I do have a release cord that I can get to in case of the opener not working though.Rocky

Exactly what I thought as I read the article, guess it never dawned on these humans to think themselves out of a situation...

I know a lady who had her ele oven full of pots and pans and plastics, she accidentally locked it and it went to self cleaning. She freaked and didnt know what to do.

So she called the FD to come.

I asked her if she knew what the main breaker in her circuit box does and she said to cuts off all the power.... I was like "wt-"

So maybe one day we will have red panic buttons on all devices. "But what of the color blind"?

Where does it end?

It dosen't end unfortunately, even with so called "red emergency/panic buttons" employed, the mouth breathers forget how to reset/turn on the equipment/service afterwards, and still need hand held coddled assistance time after time, same people, same equipment, day after day, month after month, year after year... it only gets worse as we dumb-down society

Two thoughts:

I thought if the garage door was set-up properly it shouldn't take much effort to open it. That's what the springs are for. My 16' steel insulated doors open with a couple fingers without the opener.

Is the garage door the only way out of the garage/house? Around here every garage is required to have a service/man door.

Yes in a perfect world you are correct but more and more people are buying these huge 600 to 800lb garage doors that even when spring well still are a pain in the back to lift!!

Heck even i have a battery back up garage door opener, there is only one way into the garage so in case of a power outage i can always get in the easy way.

My thoughts exactly when I read the reason for the new law. People who don't understand physics/mechanics are often at a loss in a dire emergency.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but its getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

It's not just the comprehension of physics or mechanics to respond in an emergency, some if not most just freeze and go brain dead, they can't even respond to commands to save their lives or avoid catastrophe...

I've always been a First Responder in my career field (Steel Mill/Precious metal foundry)for the last 35-40 years and been involved in responding to some nasty fires/hazmat and human injuries, but it's funny in a way how the wannabe volunteers for first response teams are all full of themselves, that is until the first really bad fire, hazmat, or massive human trauma involving limb loss/blood and you have the responders either go into shock/freeze, vomit, and in some cases pass out and just add to the kaos... just human nature, and nature will find a way to weed out the weak regardless of the safety nets or walls we put in it's path

I had a garage door installed last month. As they were about to leave I noticed it had no handle inside or out. I asked how I'm going to lift it if the power is out. They ended up putting a handle on it.

I have nothing that runs or drives in my garage, but if I did and there was a life and death situation, I'd drive through the door if I couldn't get the door open.

Once I had a door opener fail in the middle of its travel and had to take the track apart to get to work. The pull cord doesn't work if the door isn't down.

The pull cord is to unlatch/disconnect the garage door opener from the garage door so you can lift it up by hand.
The doors are all spring assisted to lift them anyway.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

I could not lift the door all the way up since the opener was not in the down position. Pulling the cord did not alleviate the situation.

One of the issues we are seeing now is that people are so afraid of someone breaking in through the garage door that they disable the emergency release by using a wire tie to secure it in an always locked on position. This is so dangerous but some people they would rather take their chances in an emergency than have some bad guy break the glass on the garage door, reach in and pull the cord. I see this more and more nowadays.

So just came into work today and on the desk was a product bulletin from Liftmaster saying that after July 2019 all openers MUST be battery back up capable. Of course those are the most expensive but i guess that will end me asking people what model opener you want to buy, You get this one and that's it!

[THANKS STU ! i keep forgetting to thank you for your advice on what to buy, so THANKS AGAIN ! up]
the openers work great, and the spring[s] were easy to tension, but caution was used when doing so. the pull cords work nice as well. but then again, i don't live in california.

I see nothing wrong w/requiring doors to have a backup battery.

The tech is there, and available in more expensive models.

Guess we shouldn't have required backup cameras in SUVs since parents running over their kids are stupid for running them over.

That is interesting. I thought the simple fix was just removing the cord so the thief can't just slip the coat hanger over the top of the garage and snag the cord to unlock the garage? In my hood they have been breaking into cars and stealing garage door openers and vehicle registrations and letting themselves into the garages at the address on the registration.
