Would a single cylinder on the size order of a locomotive or ship engine,

Less. Larger cylinders are much less detonation resistant and that poses all sorts of problems to eeking out mpg, power and emissions needs.

Experiments have definitely shown that large diameter cylinders with one sparkplug detonate sooner than smaller diameter ones as BMEP is raised higher on the same Octane rating fuel.

That is why I tried to compensate somewhat with 4 sparkplugs and direct injection in the large single cylinder.

Interesting analysis. When he 'gives it one year' that means that GM will be lucky, with rebates and incentives, to convince ANYONE to drive one. I will bet that they do a short term lease and offer an even better employee only deal to attempt to get some of these into the market. It will be the AsssTek of the Silverado lineup

Never, ever argue with an IDIOT. They will drag you to their level and then beat you with their years of experience

Let's not forget there are plenty of stupid people who buy vehicles... runaway

laugh2 The hallmark (or is it haulmark) of GM engineering.

Hey, let's put a turbo 4 cylinder in a loaded full size pickup!

That's a really stupid idea, let's do it!

You can thank the 4 banger in a full sized pick up on the EPA's 50 mpg edicts. If GM had a choice you'd still be driving a square body with points.

They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.

Trucks are heavy, even more so now and a 4 banger is just a bad idea.
