whoever has the title owns it. There is probably more to the story then we have now.

I hope they find the van out in the desert as a burned out shell.

Seriously.

I saw the van at a cruise night at the local drive in theater. I seen somewhere (possibly the Belleville news democrat) that Carter was recently picked up and will be extradited to California, but no word on where the van is now.

Kinda a open ended story I think.

No one should take a vehicle off anothers land but at the same time I find it a stretch that one would leave it like that in the pic if they really ever planned to touch it again.

I also think if one cant fund there own project, they have no business begging others to help.

It would not be hard to track that van down in a semi short time frame with the newer title system in place.

Was he nailed for the Van deal or something else?

Wow if this article is correct this Carter is a POS

You don't abandon your car if you don't register it. That's not true. You do need to file for non-operation which costs you $10. If you don't CA DMV will drop your car from the records after 7 years.

Even if it gets dropped you can still pay them to do a title search which MAY lead to them discovering the last known title.

This A-hole had no right to enter their property or to remove property no matter how strong his desire to spank his monkey over a Chevy van.

I say castrate the [censored].

It sure looked like the people that left it out in the desert with the windows and doors open and then let a tree crush it really were worried about restoring it. NOT. I bet the only reason they want it back is because the complete restoration and all the cost that go with that were done by Carter. The article also says that Carter followed the laws of the state to get the van. Again there is more to the story than that article covered.

So he to be fair should give them like maybe $100 for the van ( that's being generous for the condition he got it) or they could give him whatever it cost to so the restoration on it. That would be maybe $20,000 or more?

NO HE DID NOT FOLLOW THE LAWS OF THIS STATE

You cannot trespass on to someone else's property and remove their property.

Where the hell in the US is that legal?

Surely not in California!

Looks like they hooked him & booked him.

Update: Chris Carter was arrested and booked at the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville, Illinois, later that day for felony possession of a stolen vehicle.

A local friend of a friend lost a car he restored and customized to the original owner. It was a 30s ford of some kind. He had gone through all the proper channels and had a title in his name. A previous owner was still able to go after it, after a court battle the previous owner got it back. He was able to more or less strip the car of its drivetrain but the painted chassis and body still was returned to the previous owner.

I believe this was a car with no title, lost title was filed for and awarded to the guy who restored and customized it and the last known title holder before him got it back.

You guys defending Chris Carter would think otherwise if it had been your property that was trespassed and your car that was taken I think.

I read the whole story on Autoweek. If indeed the story is truthful then both parties have some 'splainin' to do. If I was Carter, I would strip all the parts off he was given and bought, and have a nice vanfire... flame

The van was parked on private property about 25 miles from me, he lied to the people who opened the gate for him, he didn't attempt to contact the owners until after he already took it back to Illinois. The area it was stored had a fire a couple years ago, thats when it was damaged, the owners only visited the land every couple years and didn't know it was stolen until he tried contacting the son (thru social media I understand) and not the name of the owner on the title, (which was in the van).

I understand he had set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the rebuild, and screwed people over on that deal as well, then blocked them from contacting/posting.

It takes a special person to restore a classic without a title in hand, and using go fund me pages.
