I have a 71 Dart with a 440, runs 10.20's. Backhalf ladder bar car, weighs 3000 # with me in it. 12.5-1 compression, .570 lift 260@50 solid cam. M1 with a 1050 dominator.

I currently run 110 octane turbo blue. Radiator is a 22 x 17 core aluminum with 2 10" ebay fans in a 1" deep shroud. I believe the fans flow about 1500 cfm total. The block is a half fill.

This is a drag only car. On days when the temps are greater than 85, it is usually at 200 returning to my pit spot, Occasionally it will push over that and when going rounds and they start hot lapping us at the end of the day, I have trouble keeping the temp down below 180 by the time I get back to the staging lanes.

I don't have room for a big single 16" fan as the radiator sits too close to the water pump, electric in a stock aluminum housing.

I am considering switching to E85. Will this help this situation? I have been told going to alcohol will, but wondered about trying E85.

Thanks,
Mike

I seen about a 10* drop in temp switching

My 440 is much less compression but I struggle to get temp to 180 which is where I stage it. Never sees 200.

Works for me. Hot lapping I start watching trans and tire temp.

I had about a 10 deg drop also. I still used the fan during a run. It can still get hot on E85 just takes a little longer and will cool quicker. I ran E85 for about 5 years and it worked well.

Alcohol is in my opinion the best bracket racing fuel there is. You will be able to double up on any day without any issues getting hot. the only thing that will get hot is the trans if you don't have a good cooling system for it.
Only used the fan to control the temp before a run and shut it off during a pass.

You might try some different fans, I run some dodge intrepid fans that clear the water pump in the middle after a little surgery. I have a 600ish hp small block and the water pump is real close to the radiator. Electric water pump and fans and my target burnout box temp is 140.

Your block being filled may be harder to cool but fans really made the difference with mine. I made 3 passes in less than 45 minutes on the last day of drag week this year, 140 in the burnout box every time.

E85 does cool things down alitle thats for sure, how much is probably more application specific.
Have seen a tunnelram covered in frost after a longer highway drive on a warm summerday, thats how much it can cool a top end.
Bad thing is that E85 engines realy need to be run alitle hotter to get water out of your engine unless you realy like to see milchake under your valvecovers.

Like others said, E85 will make more power the hotter you have the motor on the line to about 180. I'm happy at 160 on the line. When I'm on the return road, I'm back at 160 with one fan,and a small radiator.

On another car that's blown leaving at 160, I'm 180-190 on the return road, but the fan is still able to drive the temp back to 150 before getting to my pit.

I see typically on the switch 20 to 25 degrees as an average. I've converted 30+ cars and 5 of my own. My favorite e85 car right now runs high 4's and it drives to and from the line and never has a temp issue. Before on race gas temperature was a constant concern. Had to be 130 on the line, then 200 at the stripe, and continued to creep up on the way back to the pit. Often seeing 210.

We struggled in our dragster to keep temp in it. In fact when we run later in the year like our turkey race we usually have the engine wrapped in a blanket all day to keep some heat in it. In the summer months it was tough to get it over 180. This was a low 8 second deal.

I have a friend who switch his car over several years ago(around 8 yrs.ago) to E85 to make his car run more consistently from morning to after noon on race gas, it would vary around .2 in the 1/8 mile on race gas. He did his own conversion and made sure it was fat enough at light part throttle cruise to cool down around 10 F on the return road, his car became deadly consistent with that change, he left the same dial in on the car for six races in the summer shock
It would run that number in the morning on the first time trail and run it all day long work
I switch my car to E85 after that also up

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I'll give it a go. Racing's over for this year. I'll add it to the winter project list for next season.

Cranking in cold weather can be a little tougher than gas, but I've never had any moisture in the engine troubles like with methanol.

E85 is a great happy medium between gas and meth.
