I've been trying (to no avail) to get the pitman arm off af a power steering box I bought that I want to restore to use on my car. I broke my pitman arm puller trying to get it off. It wouldn't budge by hand so I put an impact on it and that's when the puller broke. So I bought a new puller yesterday and I still can't get it to budge. I sprayed PB Blaster on the splines and let it sit overnight but it hasn't helped. Part of the problem is the steering box is not attached to a k-frame so I can't get a lot of leverage on it but at the present time I don't have the option of mounting it to a k-frame. I don't have a large enough vise to clamp it in either. Any suggestions?

Fire. You only need to heat the arm in one spot. It will grow enough to loosen its grip on the shaft.

The proper way to use a pitman arm puller or any type of gear puller is to tighten the bolt, then strike the top of the bolt with a 5 pound hammer and repeat till it pops off. Without striking the top of the bolt after tightening each time, you will most likely just break the puller.

Heat, or hit the screw/drive end of the puller occasionally with a BFH blow after you crank it up a bit to shock the arm off

Heat is what worked for me, all else failed.

What kind of puller are you using?

Like said even with a bullet proof puller heat is required most times...IMO.

Here is the most inexpensive way to get heat to use on stuff like this.

Map gas by it's self is not hot enough, LP gas won't even begin to be enough. Mix some oxygen and you are good, plenty good.

From experience a "gear puller" won't come close to working on a pitman arm that has been on for 40 years.
I have had this snap on for close to 30 years and have used it countless times even with 3/4"drive impact and has never broken.

Guess I'm going to have to get some torches. Tried beating on the bolt as suggested and it didn't budge. Can hammering on the puller bolt jar the splined shaft and cause any damage inside the box? Just curious.

I usually run the bolt in on the pitman arm puller with my impact gun until it is tight and then hit the eye of the pitman arm with an air hammer, the rapid vibration from the air hammer should make it pop loose.

Seriously though, without having the box secured to something you aren't able to shock it with hammer blows. All the impact force is just going to move the box. It needs to be immobile.

Cut it with a wizz wheel. Cut it most of the way through and smack it with a hammer. I have a puller that will remove it. Where are you located?

I used a bearing press and heat and quenched with wd40 and hit the side with a hammer. It took a few attempts. Good luck.

"There are very few personal problems that cannot be solved through a suitable application of high explosives." - Scott Adams

A GOOD puller and a BFH, as already noted, should do it though. If you need heat I recommend a real acetylene torch. weld That little Bernz-O-Matic setup does work well on small objects but those expensive oxygen cylinders only last about ten minutes... I've got one and got tired of buying $10 bottles.

Yes and no as far as cost. Depends on how much you use it.

I had a acetylene oxygen welding/cutting torch for 20 years at home on a cart. I ran out of space for it and got tired of paying for those tanks every year from the gas supplier. Plus I really didn't use it that often after I got a plasma cutter. So I got them out of my small garage. I still have a gas torch at work I use when I need one.
I said it was the cheapest and all that is needed. Don't need a big ole torch for this job. smile

I just remembered that in either 1985-86 one summer at home, I cut up a whole rusty 73 challenger body with my torches and put out small pieces every week at the curb for trash pickup. I made them small enough to handle by the trash guys and that took like 3 months. But I did get rid of a entire car body in the weekly trash one time with a acetylene torch used to cut it up. Didn't even know what a plasma cutter was then or a electric sazzall.

I just landed that plane below 30 minutes ago in 10-15kt cross winds. eek nervous nervous

I bought used tanks at a flea market, and when I need more gas I just turn them in at the local supplier and they give me a (used) full one. No monthly fees shruggy

Speaking of cost, how much was your plasma cutter whistling
I've always wanted one but a good one isn't that cheap, and a cheap one isn't good.
