I have a chance to pick this car up. 71 Newport 2dr H/t that was rolled over light. I think this is a 400 but I'd like someone to verify it. Vin is pictured below. The balancer on the crank is what led me to believe its a 400... Thx all...

I'd say it's a 383 then...I don't think its ever been out... The car has a Stromberg 2 bbl carb on it so that makes sense... Since this may be a cast crank 383 will the convertor also need to stay with the crank? Were they internally or externally balanced? I just pulled apart a 66 383 yesterday with an excellent steel crank and no offset weight on the balancer and no weights on the converter. Thx...Dan

As far as I know ALL the cast crank engines were externally balanced. Gotta clarify a hair, the only cast crank engine mopar ever made that was NOT externally balanced was the 318, just so someone doesn't misread what you posted is all. Which is also not to say there weren't non-cast cranks motors that got external balance too.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

6bblgt makes a very good point....but "at a glance" that looks like a neutral balance harmonic balancer = 383 forged crank for 71. Is it symmetrical with no offset weight on it? And yes, your other crank would work just fine too. It would all work as-is, but I'd still balance it...but I balance everything.

I too think it is a 383 forged crank. Here is the 400 cast crank balancer. Also the 383 cast crank was with 2-bbl and auto tranny and has the same style balancer as the 400 CC balancer.

The balancer that's on it looks like the one that Mark posted. It is 2 bbl and auto. It still has the point distributor and starts and runs great with no smoke. Might be worth keeping as a back-up rather than taking it apart...

OK then, if the balancer looks like Mark's picture, it's a cast crank 383. If it's low miles, then might be a good backup motor (maybe do a valve job). Otherwise, you could put your older forged 383 crank in there as long as you used a neutral balanced harmonic balancer (no weights)

I already got the car...sold the shell and kept the 383-727 and 8 3/4 center section along with the 11x2 1/2" backing plates and drums. I need to find a set of drum brake front spindles cause if I do I'm keeping the disc brakes also...
