I FINALLY broke down and bought a primer plus system, and have a quick question about wiring it. I assume both solinoid and pump 12v+ leads can go to the switched side of the ignition lead, correct? Since i tend to forget stuff, i also want to wire in an oil pressure switch to shut off the system in case i forget to shut off the primer+. I am thinking i need a relay for another way to prime the motor with gas. I want to run a 12v+ from the switched side of the starter so i can prime it without cranking by having the shifter in gear. I want to make sure this is a good plan. As i think about it, i would need both the ignition to primer and starter to primer leads to use seperate relays to avoid feedback, correct?
So the wiring would be;
Running power will go from switched side of ignition, to activate 1st relay to 5 psi oil pressure switch, to primer.
Priming power would be;
12v+ from switched side of starter switch to relay, to primer. Shifter in gear to operate primer only,
Sound good?
This would allow no switch used to activate the primer plus for running, and shut it down when oil pressure is zero.
The starter button will be the priming only switch.

I ran a primer plus on my dragster for years, best investment I ever made, cleaner oil, better control of engine temp, less alcohol consumption. Mine was a simple install, toggle switch on dash, get in car turn it on for a second or two depending on outside air temp and engine temp, I had pre-set the idle control for about 1200 rpm, used it for driving to and from staging, return road. My procedure was to drive it all the way to the water box on gas, make a pass on alcohol, flip the switch to gas on the return road, turn off the alcohol, drive back to trailer, turn off gas first, kill ignition. My wiring was way simpler than what you're describing, with any electric fuel pump I have always made sure I cut it off first in sequence. Congrats on the system, you'll love it.😁

Do you want to use the Primer+ only for starting or also for driving around the pits (like Rapidus described)?
If starting & driving around the pits, you will still need some way to shut off the Primer+ for race mode (alcohol only). Is the alcohol pump electrical or mechanical?

Thanks HR. Missed the shut off issue.

I made my own for my dragster for starting and driving around. I used the facet pump and a nitrous plate and an orifice in the pump outlet line. Mine is wire so that 12 volts is available to the solenoid and pump only when the ignition is on and the oil pressure is above the switch setting (7psi). I activate it through a toggle switch so I can turn the fule on and off. The only issue is forgetting to turn it off when I pull the main pump shut off lever to the on position.

During the summer months I run alcohol in the primer and use a .041 orifice in the line to a nitrous plate. In the late September and October months I use gasoline and a .031 orifice. On alcohol, in the summer; the .041 orifice will generally produce a 14 to 15:1 (reading is on the gasoline scale) air fuel ratio and usually will build heat just fine. I measure the air/fuel ratio in tube #5 on a full length header about 3 inches from the flange.

My routine is to flip the ignition on, flip the primer on, wait about 5 seconds then hit the starter, and once the engine starts pull the main fuel supply on and shut the primer switch off. If I am just moving up the lanes I will do the same, except I would not pull the main pump on.

I plan on using pump 93 for the season. Bob, what do you do for initial prime? ( till oil pressure goes up)

Add a fuse, a relay to the ignition power on, a toggle switch for Gas on & a momentary pushbutton for priming.
Prime PB will let you run the pump before ignition is on & only run when you press the PB. The pump will run when the "Gas On" switch is on, the ignition is on & the Oil Pressure switch is on.
This will run like Bob's system except there is another PB to prime the system.

starter button over rides everything while it's pushed. Forgot to mention that.

I tried the alcohol priming during the summer and it actually stats better on alcohol than it did on gas. Gas wanted to surge on me. I actually think a 50/50 mixture might be the "hot" setup
