So my 1969 A727B is leaking at the o-ring, rear band apply shaft, where it enters the trans case. After removing the tail shaft, pan and valve body, can I sneak the shaft out far enough to change the o-ring without removing it completely ?

Yes, but do some serious cleaning where it slides in the case before and after you pull it.

Push it in. Clean and apply RTV with a putty knife in the pin bore. Works evert time.

Doug, just so I'm clear, you're saying not to remove it all but rather push it in as is, clean the area and spackle over the hole with RTV ?

Trouble with sealing the end of the shaft is the leaking fluid will usually prevent the RTV from bonding well; best to drain the fluid level to below the shaft, clean the area really well and then apply the RTV. Let it sit at least over night before refilling the fluid.

Yep, that was going to be my plan of attack.

Should that fail, any thoughts on partially removing the shaft to replace the o-ring ?

I followed the above advice when mine leaked.
RTV was still holding when I pulled the tranny to put in a 518 three years later.

You don't need to remove valve body or filter. Just drop the pan, get a long screwdriver, etc, push the shaft out the inch or so and replace the o-ring. I cut the tab off the tail shaft and made a hold down bracket. Seems like I smeared some RTV over the shaft when I was all done.

Look at the back of that shaft - if it is threaded in the center just screw a bolt in to the shaft and carefully pull it out far enough to replace the o ring.

If you pull it out too far then you need to drop the pan and line up the rear band anchor to get the shaft back in.
