The later 71 and 72-74 e-body upper seat frames do not the have the springs attached to the frame... the springs are built into the foam. Not worth the hassle to try and make them work.

72-74 seats have soft seat backs, 70-71 have hard backs...
The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

Have you seen original 1971 model year upholstery in frames without a full spring basket then or ? Yes and have saw a few that had the earlier with springs attached to the frames seats in 72-74 year cars also. I can't say if it was factory, dealer done or what... but like I said, only way to be sure is to pull the cover and check. All were original seat covers also.

72 have hard backs, same for some '73.........
Soft backs start to appear late 1973 or so from what I have seen so far. 73 Challenger built October of 72. No hard seat backs. As mentioned earlier, only the outside track has a lock. The inside track is free to move around all the time.

Soft backs start to appear late 1973 or so from what I have seen so far. At least in the Es the seats were soft from early on. My actual production date Nov 24, 1972 was soft. Craig
