Does anyone here have any experience running a Tom Walters (TWRCP, Inc.) transmission shield with a 904 in an A Body Barracuda?

Getting specific with TTI W2 headers and a Turbo Action Shifter.

Information on any experience with a 904 would be still be appreciated.

Thanks!

Bill

11secdart,

Did you have to modify the trans tunnel any? I have a 69 and had to make a new trans tunnel for the CSR shield.

The new shield is going on a 68.

Thanks,
Bill

...if this is the piece you’re referencing I’d say you’ll be making a new tunnel, and if 9.99 or faster you’ll also have to purchase the “flex plate shield”.

Only mods to trans tunnel are the access holes I put in so I could reach the top bell housing bolts easier which I have plates to cover. You do have to grind off a few bosses on the bellhousing to clear the shield. I don't have to have the shield as the car is slowed to run mid 11s but have it for safety, it does add about an hour to a trans removal.

Yes that's it. Its a 10 sec car no SFI flexplate or flexplate shield required.

Hopefully my 69 was an exception.

CSR recently refused to re-certify a 904 shield "because it was too old". I have heard others say they will only re-certify twice.

We were going to use a Stroud blanket, they say they have no limits on how many times they will re-certify. However they feel for a Drag Week car there should be at least three inches of clearance between the headers and the trans to keep the blanket from getting cooked. I don't think we have that much.

I recently went from Tubular Automotive headers to TTI s and they fit a lot closer to the trans and shield the bottom strap is really close to the collector. I have a Turbo Action shifter and had to modify the shifter cable bracket clamp as it is exactly were the collector flange meets the exhaust pipes. Seeing how close the shield is to the headers I can't imagine how tight a blanket will be to them. But I am sure there are a lot out there with a TTI blanket combo.

We had TTI on our old W5 combo with a Lofgren blanket so it only had to clear the straps which wasn’t a problem.

I’ve been waiting for my new 904 CSR shield for a few weeks. My 727 one expired a couple years ago and I’ve never recerted it. Hope I can if I go back that direction.

If you are running a blanket, run it over the torsion bars. It is usually too close to the headers if you try to wrap the trans.

Surprised that would pass tech, but something to look into.

NEVER. Sometimes they'll look under from the rear but that's it.

This is for my car and Tech at drag week last year was pretty tight, they bounced several to slower ETs because of insufficient trans shields or blankets. I know if I have one they won't look, that happens all the time. But not having one is an invite to inspection in my world haha. I should have one anyways for safety but I need one for tech.

On my car you can see the CSR shield from under the hood.

YOu probably can see the SFI stickers from looking under the passenger side, but I doubt if you can see the dates without crawling under with a flash light.

I have had a tech look under the car for a drive shaft loop. Mine is flat on the bottom and he did not think I had one.

There is nothing in the rules that tell you how to mount a blanket. This will protect the driver and that is what matters. I have said this many times before, I seen an explosion with a shield, which did nothing.

That racer almost lost his foot. The shield, what was left, was a yellow ball of yarn (Kevlar). A 904 is safer, but I will never run a shield.

Maybe I am misunderstanding your routing but on my car after going around the torsion bars it would have to go back over the exhaust to tie back up.

Its looking like the CSR Shield is going to be the only option, and with the time at hand we will likely be robbing the current SFI one out of my Dad's car(340Cuda) thanks Dad! lol
