The Automatic seat belt adjusters on my 1974 Challenger are locking too soon when trying to fasten them. You have to let them retract all the way back to the floor and retry. They are also noisy.
I have not found any info in the FSM on except for r&r. Anyone have assembly drawing of these?

74 Challenger, bought it new. In 1978 I replaced the original 318 with a 446 and 727. Mild cam, Jardine headers, and Holley Sniper EFI.
New engine! 511" RB, Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, Eagle rotating assy, Comp hyd roller cam, Doug's 2" headers.

They all did that back then. My 75 does it to.

You learn to pull them a little more slowly.

It still locks even when pulled slowly. The passenger side is worse than the driver's.

Wife not happy!!!

They were not this touchy when the car was new (original owner). Some one must know how to correct this.

Dust, dirt and corrosion. Take them out and clean and lube them. Be careful of the plastic parts being brittle.

I'd start with compressed air and WD-40.

The trick is to pull out more than you need in one smooth motion.

I know that. I am the original owner of the car. It was stored in my garage for 27 years on jack stands. I recently had the body restored. After all those years, it is not working as it did in the past.
I would like to have some exploded drawings of the assembly. I haven't had one of these apart and would like to see how they go together, before destroying them.

If you're able to fix it, let us know.

you also might try searches on seatbelt retractors instead of automatic seatbelt

I took it apart and studied how it works. I should have taken some pics. There is a spring that disengages the lock when the belt is completely retracted. I just bent it to release sooner. I sprayed some silicone lubricant on the moving parts, also.
It seems to work better now. We'll see what happens when it is used a while.
