For you guys that have switched from a 727 to a powerglide how did it affect your car? Slow down 60', pick up mph, run same et?

Based on most of the things I see, a Glide is over twice as efficient (less power to operate) than a standard, non-roller 727. And only slightly more efficient than a 904. But it's also lighter. That equates to power reaching the tires and MPH.

The big factor is the low gear ratio. The importance of finding that sweet spot of "not too much, not too little" is overlooked by many people. Whether it will help and by how much depends on your situation.

Typically though, going from a 727 to a 904 with basically the same low gear, which I have done, is worth a tenth or tenth and a half. Going from a 904 to a Glide, it didn't really pick up much. But the consistency and how the car worked in the first 60' was way better, AFTER we got the right low gear in it. It was a turd with the 1.76

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

My thoughts exactly. I had a small block 70 Dart, and I think the lack of torque was why it wasn't as fast with the powerglide. Went from a 727 to a powerglide with a 1.82 first gear. wasn't faster or more consistant, because it wasn't hitting the tires as hard. 360 ci engine at 3000 lbs, was running NHRA Super Street.

Yep. I went from quick IF the track was there, to turd like driving away from a stoplight to quick and consistent. All with the same power, just different SLRs.

You can make a 727 or 904 a two speed with a CRT 2nd gear launch trans brake valve body for a lot less then converting to a pg.

If the 1.82 or 1.76 isn't enough for most people, I'm guessing the 1.45 would be a struggle.

I get the really big powered stuff can use less SLR, but leaving in 2nd on a 727 would be REAL soft for most stuff.

Finally, an explanation that makes sense.

I switched my Hemi GTX from a glide to a 727. I weighed every part Trans, converters flex plates ,drive shafts and don't forget adapter hub. The Glide was 30 lbs lighter, but by the time you put in the longer driveshaft, heavier converter and hub assembly it was a wash. been there!

iagree This is exactly what I intend to do soon. The 1.45 gear will be soft for something not making a lot of power though.
For what a bulletproof glide will cost me for my car, I'll try one of Cope's transbrakes first.

Put a 999 low 277 gear set in the 904 and second gear is 1.54.
