I will tell you something else, every shop is the best in the world till it gets harder than scuff and paint, then look out. You know sbirds don't fit too well I can part my car, sell all the new parts, add 50-60 grand, not waste my time, and be driving next weekend. Who needs the resto shop nightmare. It seems to go well if its a gm product. For the record I own my own business, manage projects well, and ain't stupid, so be careful, shops will screw you. It was amazing how much they knew my car was worth everytime I walked in the door. I said whatever not planning on selling it, and you are a paint shop not a car dealer. I get the last laugh, I paid $1350.00, so I still make out, most guys don't.

Along with a shop or two that coulda' did it proud... (And yer buy-in mighta' been a little steep... A friend from the neighborhood bought a Vit C 440+6 SuperBird for $750.00... In '78...

I spent 5 days a week in body shops for 20+ years. I know what all of the pitfalls are, and how to avoid them, and who to avoid. I have met every flake and tweaker and job hopper and crook in the industry that you can possibly imagine. If we restore this car, I know what I'm in for, and I know what surprises may be lurking, and I know those surprises cost money. My wife loves the car. We can afford to spend the money on it. That appears to either bother some of you, or concern some of you, or annoy some of you. I have no idea why. It's not difficult to understand, or at least, it shouldn't be.

Peace brother, sounds like you have it handled and know the pitfalls. It bothers nobody on here that you love your car, just trying to help. I question why you want a shop recommendation if you know all this and every bad person in the industry, could you point me to a shop? 40 grand will not do what you want in a $50 an hour shop in my opinion. Again just trying to help.

I question why you want a shop recommendation if you know all this and every bad person in the industry, could you point me to a shop? Because the shops that I have good long-term relationships with focus primarily on collision work, and while some of them would likely do the resto work I'm looking for, it would be unreasonable of me to expect something this extensive to be done by a collision-focused shop within the timeframe I'd like it to be done. When I had my wagon painted, that was an easy, straightforward job...new windshield, 2 days of body work, and a repaint. That was it. That was easy for my friend's shop to squeeze in as filler work. The Valiant is nowhere near that.

Things have changed in the industry, you understand that so thats good. Anybody that can do what you want will be busy, figure 50% more than the original bid, and I would bet 2 years. I hope you find someone. The difference is that a reputable, professional resto shop does restos. A collision shop makes money on insurance work. Very easy for them to push a resto job into the corner to collect dust, or worse, in my case, to feel obligated to work on my resto at the expense of collision work because we are friends. I don't want to put a friend in that position.

I disagree, with a rest shop, if you pay $50 an hour, you're gonna get an hours worth of work, in an insurance shop, if the book says it should take 2 hours, and they do the job in one hour, then you ripped for an hours worth of work, cause they are sill gonna charge for two hours.

My apologies for not having a freakin' crystal ball; that's why I floated the notion that there might be sentiment involved, as it sounds like a lot of work is needed. But go ahead and alienate people, and then wonder why folks either leave or avoid discussing a topic with you. A ton of work is needed, but we drive it all summer without any issues. It runs like a champ, though the engine is a little tired. It seeps a bit of oil from the pan, and a bit of trans fluid from the pan, but that's it. It has front discs, hardened valve seats, new tires, new brakes, every light works, horn works, power top works. It was the perfect first "old car" for my wife when we bought it 13 years ago, and she loves it. It's either redo this car, or nothing, and I'm totally fine with that. Discuss, don't discuss, answer my question, don't answer my question. Whatever makes you happy.

Your 3rd from last sentence is the info that should have been in your original post; you're the one who got all goofy & insulting about people not knowing it has to be that car. Your last 2 sentences are pretty snide, but whatever...
BTW, God help me if I ever find my Grampa's '55 Chevy or my Dad's '66 Sport Fury... My question was very clear...can anyone suggest a restoration shop to do a nice but not OE-quality resto in the geographical areas I mentioned? My reasons for doing so, or my ability to foot the bill, have nothing to do with the question. The 55 would be a piece of cake for a guy like you who owns a shop...just get a catalog for parts, and have at it. The 66 would be a glorious thing to see, but you'd probably get unsolicited advice similar to what I got here, so keep that in mind before you post the question. I can promise you I'll reply only if I have an answer to whatever question it is that you ask.

I don't see your geographic area for resto in the thread, but I had my full paint and body and some assembly done at Clark Classic Restorations in NC as mentioned by someone else...I am very happy, OE, no...they gave me the option of orange peel, runs and the such, but I wanted the show car finish with a OE look everywhere else. My choice, I did the disassembly and a lot of the reassembly...my car came out gorgeous...I would have interviewed with Holgar too at his shop, plus he's here in NY too, but I didn't know about him...but judging on the work he's done on the Daytona in HMM, he's more than capable and seems like a decent guy to boot...
