I've heard of people doing it, also heard it's not a good idea.

I am using the .027 Cometics under my 440 source heads.

The OEM guys invented the MLS gasket to fix problems they were having with blown head gaskets. Remember the Vega and other cars like that? That is why MLS gaskets exist.

I used them on my 505 stroker, No leaks. But union the freshen up I did notice the steel left a impression in the aluminum.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

Currently using them on a fiends 440 w/ Eddy heads. He bought open chamber heads used. We used them to get the compression up to 10.0-1. Together 2 years, no leaks. Solid 11.30 car.

Judging from the last several years here, many have used the steel shims with aluminum heads. My warning would be that both surfaces need to be really flat.

I've ran the Mr. Gasket P/N 1135 for 10 yrs (125-200 passes a yr depending on how well I did) with 440 source heads without an issue. Did freshen up the engine twice during that time. Was running just a tad over 10:1 compression. Never had an issue.

If i were to try it, i would use copper coat and do a retorque for sure. Someone reported marks left on the aluminum heads, so a rwtorque would be in need.

We used no copper coat and have not retorqued.
