I'm not really clear on the purpose. I've been on PCs since the Z-100 days, and am used to getting under the hood on em.
But this cell phone thing is something I know little about. Any good websites for this?

I rooted a tablet, it gives the option of totally taking control of it and removing or adding applications at will that you are normally locked out.

Like factory installed stuff the likes to "phone home" with your location and history. I still have not found the application that likes to fire up the GPS at random and try to report location.

You can also download and sideload applications where you would normally have to go through the google play store.

all of the above, plus being able to roll back to an older version.

google was bad about not caring much about backwards compatiblitly for earlier stuff they put out.

so at some point even though the update ran, it started to drag the system down to a crawl so I had to root one to an older build where it still ran ok.

mostly you have to search 2 or 3 sites to find good instructions and compare.
some are pretty good step by step, some have screen shots, some just wall of text, some have you tube videos.

some are out of date by a couple of versions by the time they get them posted, so you have to figure out the step that got added that they missed.

And it depends on how "new" the phone is.

Like rooting on a new samsung 9 might be hard to find instructions that are credible right now. but the 8 or earlier should be pretty easy.

and just like anything look at the review comments on it before you use that instruction set as your base.

Thanks. Its not like switching OS then. I like dumping a bunch of apps I'll never use. It's a Moto G4 through republic wireless, would I have connectivity issues? Or should I leave well enough alone?

I've rooted a few but I also bricked one too but read carefully how to do it. Once rooted you can change the os if there's one out there for it.

yeah it isn't like going from windows to linux.

it is more like backing out a patch or upgrade from windws that is screwing you up.

or doing a clean install of windows to get rid of dells bloat ware.

as long as you record a few settings it shouldn't have any issues.

I have not seen it from a rooting issue, but moving unlocked phones causes issues as some apps were carrier specific. like texting has issues if you use the bulit in app moving from carrier to carrier.
you might wipe the "installed" app and need to do another to make it work.
but that is all I can think of.

but if it is a popular root you might see known issues before you do it.

I've already disabled a bunch of stuff. Cyrillic input? Really? Lots of preloaded crap that just eats battery and slows speed.
Thanks for all the info. I'll dig more and proceed carefully.

I still use my samsung galaxy s3. I had thought about rooting it but I found I could just disable the junk apps and features that I never use so I never bothered to root it. I used to be into building computers and all that stuff but these days I just don't have the interest in dinking around with the stuff anymore so I took the easy way out .
